The Assassination of Julius Caesar All the News Romans Need to Know 44 B.C. Rome Julius Caesar Gets Assassinated By Bryan Davidson In March 44 B.C. Julius Caesar, our leader, was planning a speech for the senate. Before he organized the speech, he was named “dictator for life” by the senate. After this happened Julius Caesar gained more power. The plebians loved Julius Caesar but many nobles and senators were threatened by his growing power, success, and popularity. Leading up to the speech, Caesar’s wife told him that she saw him in a dream. She said that in her dream he was in her arms dying from stab wounds. I thought that when he heard about her dream, that he wouldn’t give the speech. Julius also talked to a fortune teller. The fortune teller told him “beware the Ides of March”. The Ides of March was a Roman holiday celebrated on March 15th. After that happened I definitely wouldn’t have done the speech. But apparently that wouldn’t stop him. On March 15th, Julius Caesar went to the senate chamber, sat in his usual chair. Then within minutes, he was surrounded by about 20 senate members. Then all of the senate members surrounding him took out daggers hidden in their robes, and stabbed him 23 times. This group was led by Caesar’s friend Marcus Brutus and Gaius Cassius. Marcus Brutus had the last stab that killed him. Before Caesar died, his last words were “Et tu, Brute” meaning “You too Brutus”. Julius Caesar died in front of Pompeius statue. Julius made the wrong decision by going to give the speech. I was very sad when Julius Caesar was assassinated because he was a good ruler. But apparently those senators thought that he had too much power. They thought that Caesar was a threat to the republican system. I went to a speech all happy and came back with sadness. There was great sadness among the plebeians, for we loved him as our ruler. Below is a painting of Julius Caesar’s assassination Questions: 1) Why was Julius Caesar assassinated? 2) What was the Ides of March?
