Guiding the Sun
The Institute for Solar Energy Research (ISFH) uses light-guiding
structures to increase the efficiency of large-area solar modules made
from industrial solar cells to a record value of 20.2%. Highly reflective
and structured materials are utilized, which guide more light onto the
active solar cell surfaces and increase the area efficiency of the
module, lowering the costs of photovoltaic (PV) systems.
Light-management is essential for PV systems and a main research
topic at ISFH. Bifacial cells facilitate light harvesting from both sides as
well as innovative interconnection schemes. Macropores and rear-side
contacts are used to lower the front side reflection. The software
DAIDALOS can be used to trace the path of light rays through a PV
system.
