Labs
Purpose:
Application of Anatomical Terminology. Students will be able to apply anatomical planes and
directional terminology by dissecting a three-dimensional object.
Materials Needed:
 10 – gummy bears per pair of students (cadaver)
 1 – razor blade per pair of students
 1 – sheet of 8 ½ x 11 white paper (dissection surface) per pair of students
 Transparent tape
Guidelines:
1. Place the gummy bear in the anatomical position on the dissecting tray.
a. Define:
i. What is anatomical position?
ii. How do we divide our bodies three-dimensionally? (Anatomical Planes)
iii. Superior/Inferior:
iv. Anterior/Posterior:
v. Medial/Lateral:
vi. Distal/Proximal:
vii. Superficial/Deep:
viii. Dorsal/Ventral:
ix. Prone/Supine:
2. Sketch and label each dissection on your assigned notebook page. Attach an extension page if
necessary.
Name: ______________________________________
3. Dissection: Divide each gummy bear using the knife, glue it onto the circle, and label it.
a. Dorsal and Ventral:
b. Anterior and Posterior:
c. Prone and Supine:
d. Medial and Lateral:
e. Cut along the transverse plane.
f.
Cut along the midsagittal plane.
g. Cut along the frontal plane.
