NONVERBAL COMMUNICATION: a process by which an individual stimulates meaning in the mind of another person through intentional and unintentional displays of nonverbal behavior (communication without words). FUNCTIONS OF NONVERBAL BEHAVIOR: Repeat- nonverbal message conveys same idea as verbal; can take away verbal and still get message (Examples: saying “Hi” while waving, saying “Yes” while nodding, telling someone to “be quiet” while holding finger in front of mouth) Contradict- goes against verbal message; don’t match (We tend to believe nonverbal over verbal) Examples- saying “No” while nodding head up and down, saying “I’m fine” while frowning and slouching) Substitute- replaces verbal message; verbal taken out but still understood (Examples: waving hello instead of saying it, thumbs up instead of “good job”) Complement – supports verbal message; used to show how to do something, sizes, to emphasize emotional feelings (Examples: pointing while giving directions, saying “The fish was this big” while holding your arms out) Regulate- nonverbal cues that keep the conversation flowing (nodding head, making eye contact, leaning forward) Accent- use of gestures and facial expressions to emphasize or punctuate spoken words (“That’s it!” while slamming down fist, “My first point…” while holding up one finger)
