Arthropod
Arthropod means (1)_____________ appendages.
All arthropods have a hard exoskeleton which is usually composed of substance called
(2)_____________, go through periodic (3)_____________ as they shed or molt their exoskeleton,
have (4)_____________ body segments (head, thorax, cephalothorax, and abdomen), jointed
(5)_____________, and an (6)_____________ circulatory system.
Ecdysis is (7)_____________, to replace old exoskeleton.
The (8)_____________ of arthropods is composed of chitin.
An open circulatory system is one in which blood is pumped out of the (9)_____________ into the
body.
Arthropods are divided on the type of (10)_____________ they have.
Terrestrial arthropods like insects, centipedes, and millipedes breathe through hollow air tubes called
(11)_____________.
Aquatic chelicerates like the (12)_____________ crab have (13)_____________ to breathe;
spiders, ticks, and scorpions use (14)_____________ to get air.
Crustaceans breathe through (15)_____________.
Arthropods have a nervous system with an anterior (16)_____________ and sensory organs that
include compound eyes or simple eyes called (17)_____________; (18)_____________ membranes
for hearing; and (19)_____________ for smelling, feeling, or tasting.
(20)_____________ tubules filter wastes in arthropods.
The subphylum Chelicerarta contains the class (21)_____________ with the horseshoe Crab and the
class (22)_____________ with spiders, ticks, scorpions, and mites. Both classes have
(23)_____________ body regions, the (24)_____________ and abdomen, no (25)_____________,
eight pairs of legs, and (26)_____________ or fangs.
Appendages on the head of chelicerates called (27)_____________ are used for sensing the
environment and getting food into the mouth.
Spiders have posterior glands called (28)_____________ that help make their silken webs to get
prey. Spiders detect movement whenever their prey gets caught in their (29)_____________ and
by sensory (30)_____________ on their body. Spiders produce (31)_____________ to kill their
prey and are beneficial because they feed mainly on (32)_____________.
Spiders are unlike insects in that they have (33)_____________ not six legs, only simple
(34)_____________ and not compound, and (35)_____________ body regions and not three.
The body regions of spiders are the cephalothorax and (36)_____________.
The body regions of insects are the head, (37)_____________, and abdomen.
The (38)_____________ recluse and black (39)_____________ are two poisonous spiders in our
area.
The class Crustacea is in the subphylum (40)_____________ and includes crabs, shrimp,
(41)_____________, crayfish, barnicles, and the terrestrial pillbugs and (42)_____________.
Crustaceans have a pair of sensory antenna and a pair of shorter (43)_____________ for balance.
The head also contains three types of mouthparts - (44)_____________, maxilla, and maxillipeds.
They also have pincers called (45)_____________ to help catch and eat food.
Aquatic crustaceans have an external shell or (46)_____________ that must be molted, and they
are used by man for food.
The class (47)_____________ contains predators called centipedes with fangs,
(48)_____________ glands, posterior (49)_____________, and (50)_____________ pair of legs
per body segment.
The class (51)_____________ contains millipedes which are (52)_____________ with
(53)_____________ pairs of legs per body segment.
