Overall purpose of post:




Supporting the development and execution of direct marketing campaigns, for
retention, acquisition, trading and gaming.
Attend internal and external meetings and training as required, including
conducting external supplier training.
Liaise frequently with external agencies, consultants, organisations, charities
and suppliers in the execution of direct marketing and as required.
Ensure complaints are dealt with appropriately for direct marketing activity and
recorded in line with the FRSB guidelines.

Direct Marketing Fundraiser
The Direct Marketing Officer will support on-going opportunities for existing and
potential donors to engage with Mencap ensuring that they are aware of and
understand our mission, campaigns and fundraising ask. They will support the
achievement of direct marketing budget targets and work with their wider team to find
ways to deliver beyond existing Fundraising targets. They will have a sound
understanding of Mencap supporters and be able to make recommendations for
campaign delivery based on these insights.
KPI’s:
 Supports the development and implementation of Direct Marketing projects,
working within Direct Marketing team to meet fundraising targets.
 Supports the building of Mencap’s relationship with its Direct Marketing
donors, developing that relationship where possible to increase loyalty and
donor retention.
 Helps create meaningful fundraising communications through a greater
understanding of our services and donors.
Measures: Manager’s observations, achievement of objectives and feedback from
others, donor retention.

The Direct Marketing Officer will organise their work in a way that enables them to be

required amount of time.
 Looks for better ways of doing things and implements these where appropriate
or makes recommendations to the Direct Marketing Manager.
 Prioritises their jobs to ensure that the most important tasks are always
completed on time and to a high standard.
 Demonstrates the ability to work with limited direct supervision and is selfmotivated in their work.
 Works closely with other departments to schedule work and sets appropriate
deadlines to ensure key appeal dates are met.

Problem Solver
The Direct Marketing Officer will demonstrate the ability to deal with problems when
they come up and raise any issues or concerns with the Direct Marketing Manager.

 When things do go wrong they take responsibility for putting them right or
reporting them to the Direct Marketing Manager.
 Makes recommendations of how things could be made better or where cost
savings might be made.

Knowledge:

Experience of running raffle, lottery or trading campaigns

Proficient at using Microsoft Office, in particular Excel and Word E

Experience of using a donor database (eg Alms, Raiser’s Edge)
to access information and run reports.


Ability to organise workload, juggle priorities and work quickly

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including the
ability to demonstrate diplomacy, rapport and sensitivity
 Creative writing/thinking, demonstrable experience of creating
briefs providing creative feedback and copy editing.
 High degree of numeracy, capable of managing budgets,
setting up simple forecasts and making recommendations
based on results.
