Discussion
1. The evolution and development of plants from green algae is basically the story of how they solved the problems
associated with moving up onto land; specifically the problems of:
a. preventing desiccation
b. support of their bodies
c. transport of materials
d. needing water to bring sperm and egg together.
Describe how plants solved these problems as they evolved. Include specific groups of plants in your discussion
2. Plants still follow the ancient life cycle of their algal ancestors, using an alternation of generation between a
diploid stage and a haploid stage. The cycle was modified considerably as plants evolved but all plants still retain
the same basic process.
Compare and contrast the life cycles of the most primitive plants (such as a moss) with the most advanced plants
(flowering
plants)..
