Course Description
This course studies the pathophysiological aspects of the diseases of the eye. The course will concentrate on
pathogenesis, clinical features, investigation and treatment of ocular diseases of the eye. It will provide a
comprehensive review of diseases of the eyelid, the conjunctiva, the cornea, the lens, and the iris, the uveal tract,
orbit, retina, macula and intraocular tumors diseases, it will also cover ocular hypertention and the mechanisms of
glaucoma .
Course Objectives
By the end of this course students should be able to understand the epidemilology , the symptoms and signs, the
visual sequelae , the available modes of treatments of the ocular diseases.
Intended Learning Outcomes (ILOs)
A) Knowledge & Understanding
1. Classify the ocular diseases according to the parts of the eye.
2. Clarify the pathogenesis of eye diseases..
3. Understand the epidemiological aspects of eye diseases.
4. Explain the symptoms and signs of the diseases.
5. List the differential diagnosis of different clinical findings .
6. Identify the available investigations that help reach the definitive diagnosis.
7. Recognize evidence-based treatment of the eye diseases.
8. Understand the role of the general practitionor when dealing with these cases ..
B) Intellectual Skills
1. Apply the knowledge of ocular anatomy and physiology to differentiate normal from abnormal .
2. Analyze the clinical picture of each ocular disease. Appreciate team work in clinical practices.
3. Specify the causative agents and risk factors for each disease.
4. Predict the prognosis for each disease.
C) Professional & Practical Skills
1. Apply the knowledge in taking history and physical examination.
2. Interpret the results of investigations ordered for diagnosis.
3. Build the protocol of the management.
D) General Transferrable Skills
1.
Appreciate team work in seminar.

Students are expected to prepare one or two seminars during the course, and expected to attend in the operation
theater in operative days to see at least one of the following surgeries (cataract, strabismus, retina and refractive
surgery)

arrival and leave daily
