Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters
While watching the film, make notes on the chart for the following areas:
Content: What is the film’s purpose? Who is the intended audience? What is the overall plot?
How does this compare to actual Greek mythology?
Narrative: is the plot linear or fragmented? Are there flashbacks? What is the protagonist’s
overall goal? Are there controversial elements in the film? Do they have a purpose in advancing
the story or character?
Character: how are the central characters introduced? What details in the images help define
the protagonist’s personality? Are there any familiar characters or archetypes? Are the
characters stereotypical?
Themes: What is the theme of the movie? How is this theme presented?
Editing and Camera: How long are the various shots and scenes? What transitional devices are
used to move from scene to scene? What is the distance and angle of the camera shot and how
does this affect the events? When are close ups and distance shots used effectively?
Lighting and Music: Are scenes brightly lit or shadowed? How is colour used in the movie?
How does music define the atmosphere, mood and tone of a scene?
Write a film analysis using the information:
Paragraph 1: What is the movie? What is its purpose and who is the audience? Try to give a
brief, overall impression here.
Paragraph 2: Summarize the plot and its structure (without necessarily giving away the ending)
Paragraph 3: Link it to Greek mythology. Are the characters true to the original? What has been
altered? Why do you think this has been done and is it effective?
Paragraph 4: Structure of the movie including elements from narrative, editing/camera and
lighting/music and how these elements contribute to telling the story effectively.
Paragraph 5: Theme of the movie and its effectiveness
Paragraph 6: Recommendations and personal overall reaction to the movie
