The human body has several defined systems. The systems that we will be studying are the muscular system, skeletal system,
nervous system, respiratory system, circulatory system, and digestive system. Each system plays a unique role in our existence
in this world and all of the systems interact with each other to keep our bodies functioning properly.
Topics:
Body Systems
1. Group A- Muscular System
a. Name the three types of muscle tissue and describe where they are located
b. Describe which ones are voluntary and involuntary, and which are striated or not striated.
c. List some of the major muscles in the body
Group B- Body tissues
d. Name the four types of body tissue and where they are located
e. Give 2-3 examples of each type of body tissue
f. Describe what ligaments and tendons are
2.
Group A- Skeletal System
a. Identify the difference between the axial and appendicular skeleton
b. Identify and describe the parts of a bone (i.e. bone marrow, compact bone, spongy bone)
c. Name the major bones of the hips, spine, legs, and feet
Group B- Skeletal System
d. List the FIVE functions of the skeletal system and explain what they do
e. Explain what reflexes and joints are.
f. Name the major bones in the arms, hands, shoulder, and head (plus the sternum in the rib cage).
3.
Group A- Nervous System
a. Describe the parts of a neuron and the purpose of a neuron
b. Identify the parts and functions of the central nervous system
c. Describe how the brain controls the functions of the body
Group B- Nervous System
d. List the main parts of the eye
e. Identify the parts and functions of the peripheral nervous system
f. Explain the difference between rods and cones in the eye
4.
Group A- Respiratory System
a. Identify the major parts of the respiratory system INSIDE the lungs
b. Describe how gas exchange (CO2 and O2) occurs on the alveoli
c. Describe the transport of gases throughout the human body (you may include some circulatory parts)
Group B- Respiratory System
d. Identify the major parts of the respiratory system OUTSIDE the lungs (windpipe, diaphragm, nose, mouth)
e. Describe the difference between inspiration and expiration (how pressure affects this as well)
f. Identify what muscle controls respiration in the human body
5.
Group A- Circulatory System
a. Identify the main components of the circulatory system (especially the main blood vessels, e.g., capillaries)
b. Identify the two types of blood cells and describe their main functions
c. What is the function of hemoglobin
d. Explain what platelets and plasma of the blood are
Group B- Cardiovascular System
e. Identify and explain the four chambers of the heart
f. Describe the route of oxygenated blood through the body
g. Describe the route of DEoxygenated blood through the body
6.
Group A- Digestive System
a. Identify the main function of the digestive system
b. Identify the major components of the digestive system through the alimentary canal (mouth to anus)
c. Explain where digestion first takes place and where most of the absorption actually occurs
d. Explain what the epiglottis does
Group B- Digestive System
e. Identify the major components of the digestive system that assist with digestion (pancreas, gall bladder, liver)
f. Explain how each one contributes to digestion
g. Explain chemical versus mechanical digestion
h. What are the functions of villi AND the large intestine
How to Write a Song or Parody a Song:
Two choices: Write your own song from scratch or write a parody!
Creating a Human Biology Parody:
1. Choose a song you would like to use for your parody. I recommend looking at the net for MIDI files you can use for
your presentation. Here is a site I found http://www.mididb.com/ that has a variety to listen to.
2. Find the lyrics for the song you have chosen.
3. Research the body system you have decided to write the parody on.
4. Replace the words of the lyrics with words that have the same number of syllables per line. Now you’ve got yourself a
parody!
Requirements
1. Type written lyrics with title for the song or parody.
a. Song or parody must include correct information on the topic chosen.
b. School appropriate material may only be included in the song or parody.
c. Parody: Include the title of the song you are parodying and the artist.
i. Suggestive lyrics about non -school appropriate material will not be accepted.
2. Groups will work together to create one study guide for their assigned body system.
NO MORE THAN 3 PEOPLE PER GROUP! ONLY 2 GROUPS CAN TAKE A BODY SYSTEM!
a. Copies of the lyrics must be provided to the entire class. Example below
b. On the back of the sheet, create an outline of the information on your body system. Example below.
3. You perform your song or parody on a cd or through video for the class. Have fun with this! Make a music video, or
just sing to the camera! It does not matter, go with it, and learn about human biology!
Print lyrics with the phrase and chorus
on back
Create an outline of your information with visual aides
