TFSD Unwrapped Standard #4 Grades 11-12, Astronomy Power Standard (s) Reference: Standard 4 – Light and Stars State Standard: District Standard: TFSD Power Standard: Students will learn how starlight is collected and analyzed, and what it has revealed about the life cycles of stars. Concepts: Need to know about (Nouns) Telescopes Electromagnetic Spectrum Stellar Life Cycles Skills: Be able to do (Verb Phrases) Compare and contrast different types of electromagnetic radiation Explain the differences necessary to capture different types of electromagnetic radiation (optical vs. radio telescopes) Describe the life cycle of a low-mass star Describe the life cycle of a high-mass star Identifying Big Ideas from Unwrapped Standards: 1. There are many types of electromagnetic radiation, from gamma rays to radio waves, differing only in their frequency and size. 2. Telescopes must be designed according to the type of light they wish to collect. 3. There are several stages in the life of a star. They are determined by the mass of the star. Essential Questions from Big Ideas to Guide Instruction and Assessment: 1. What are the different types of electromagnetic radiation? 2. Why aren’t all telescopes the same? 3. What are the stages in the life of a star, and what determines them? Possible Topics or Context: (what you will use to teach the concepts and skills-particular unit, lessons or activities) EM worksheet Stellar Brochures (Major Project) Lens & Mirror Labs
