Using a Metered Dose Inhaler Correctly
1. Exhale deeply.
2. Use aerochamber on MDIs if possible.
3. Place mouthpiece of inhaler 1-2” from mouth if NOT
using aerochamber. If using aerochamber, place
mouthpiece directly in mouth.
4. As patient releases dose, he should inhale SLOWLY
and DEEPLY.
5. HOLD breath 10 seconds and then exhale
NORMALLY.
6. Wait 1-2 minutes BETWEEN puffs and BETWEEN
other medications.
7. Wash all equipment except medication canister daily
to prevent infection.
8. Rinse mouth after every treatment (absolutely
essential with corticosteroids).
