REDEEMER CHURCH OF KNOXVILLE
THE DIVINE SERVICE
The Eleventh Sunday after Pentecost
AUGUST 16, 2009 | 9:00 & 11:00 AM
In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, this church opens wide her doors and
offers welcome to all who sin and need a Savior; to all who are spiritually
weak and seek rest; to all who mourn and long for comfort; to all who
struggle and desire victory; to all who are broken and long for healing; to
all who are strangers and want fellowship; to all who hunger and thirst
after righteousness and want to be satisfied; and to whomsoever will come.
REFLECTIONS
The only thing to fear is fearlessness.
— Michael Stipe
Do you know what the most frequent command in the Bible turns out to be? What
instruction, what order is given, again and again, by God, by angels, by Jesus, by
prophets and apostles? What do you think – “Be good?” “BE HOLY, for I am holy?” Or,
negatively, “Don't sin?” “Don't be immoral?” No. The most frequent command in the
Bible is: “Don't be afraid.” DON'T BE AFRAID. FEAR NOT. DON'T BE AFRAID.
— NT Wright
Jesus, the Name that charms our fears, that bids our sorrows cease; 'Tis music in the
sinner's ears, 'tis life, and health, and peace."
— Charles Wesley

3. Dear Name, the rock on which I build, | My shield and hiding place,
My never failing treasury, filled | With boundless stores of grace!
Jesus, my Shepherd, Brother, Friend, | My Prophet, Priest, and King,
My Lord, my life, my way, my end, | Accept the praise I bring.
Be not afraid,
Praise we the Lord, Father and Son,
Where you go there I am with you.
And Holy Spirit with them one;
Be not afraid,
And may the Son on us bestow
Where you go there I am with you.
All gifts that from the Spirit flow,
4. Weak is the effort of my heart, | And cold my warmest thought;
But when I see Thee as Thou art, | I'll praise Thee as I ought.
RECEIVING GOD’S WORD
All: All gifts that from the Spirit flow. (3x)
CONFESSION OF FAITH
PRAYER OF ENTRANCE 
WORDS OF WELCOME
CONFESSION OF SIN
The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me to lie down in green
pastures: he leads me beside the still waters. He restores my soul: he leads me
in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake. Yea, though I walk through the
valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for you are with me; your rod and
your staff they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my
enemies: you anoint my head with oil; my cup runs over. Surely goodness and
mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the
LORD forever.
Generous God, you send us the Spirit of courage, but we have been afraid. You
send us the Spirit of truth, but we cling to our illusions. You send us the Spirit of
healing, but we cannot let go of our hurts. Holy Spirit of forgiveness, come to us
again: help us to believe that you will never leave us nor forsake us. Help us to
say with confidence: “The Lord is my helper, I will not be afraid. What can man
do to me?” We hold out to you all our particular burdens of guilt and sin, and we
ask for your help to live the way of your justice and mercy. Amen.
SILENT CONFESSION
WORDS OF ENCOURAGEMENT
Isaiah 43:1-3; 1 John 4:18
Timothy 1:7
But now thus says the LORD, he who created you, he who formed you: "Fear not, for I
have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine. When you pass through
the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you;
when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume
you. For I am the LORD your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior.
The LORD is my light and my salvation—whom shall I fear?
The LORD is the stronghold of my life—of whom shall I be afraid?
Christians, I declare to you the forgiveness of your sins in the name of Jesus, your
Savior, whose perfect love casts out fear.
For God has given us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.
Come, let us adore him!
 Our help is in the name of the Lord, | The Maker of heaven and earth.
O Lord, open our lips, | And our mouth will show forth your praise!

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE
O God, we pray for your church throughout the world and in this city: make us one as you
are one. Bless our ministers and their labors for the sake of the gospel. Make us strong in
faith and in love, even as we confess our weakness and sin to you and to each other.
Grant us all the peace that passes understanding and take away our guilt and despair.
Lord, hear our prayer.
We pray for all who have not received the gospel of Christ – for those who have never
heard the word of the cross; for those who have lost their faith; for those hardened by
sin or indifference; for those who are enemies of the cross of Christ and persecutors of
his disciples; and for those who have refused to come into his love. Lord, please open
their hearts to the truth, and lead them to the hope of faith and the joy of forgiveness.
Lord, hear our prayer.
We pray for our national leaders: for our President, for members of Congress and the
Supreme Court, for state and local officials, and for our troops and their families. Bless
and protect these who serve, that by your help they may promote justice and truth.
Lord, hear our prayer.
Lord, we pray for the aged and the weak, for the widowed and orphans, and for the sick
and suffering.
Lord, hear our prayer.
Father, we pray for the poor and the oppressed, for the unemployed, for strangers and the
lonely, and for the abused and abandoned. May they know that you know their suffering,
that you were rejected, abandoned and afflicted for us, so that we would never be alone or
forgotten in our suffering.
Lord, hear our prayer.
And now, we pray together the prayer which Jesus taught us, saying:
Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be
done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our
debts as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from
evil: for thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.
THE PSALTER LESSON 

there is no salvation for him in God.

THE PEACE OF CHRIST 
In the ancient church, members of the congregation greeted one another with a sign of
friendship. In the same way, let us welcome one another in the Lord:
7 Arise, O LORD!
Save me, O my God!
For you strike all my enemies on the cheek;
you break the teeth of the wicked.
May the peace of Christ be always with you! | And also with you!
Let us offer one another a sign of peace.
8 Salvation belongs to the LORD;
your blessing be on your people! Selah

SPEAK, O LORD

1. Speak, O Lord, as we come to you | to receive the food of your Holy Word.
Take your truth, plant it deep in us; | Shape and fashion us in your likeness,
That the light of Christ might be seen today | in our acts of love and our deeds of faith.
Speak, O Lord, and fulfill in us | all your purposes for your glory.

JESUS, I COME
Sleeper/Thompson
1. Out of my bondage, sorrow, and night, | Jesus, I come, Jesus, I come;
Into thy freedom, gladness, and light, | Jesus, I come to thee;
Out of my sickness, into thy health, | Out of my wanting and into thy wealth,
Out of my sin and into thyself, | Jesus, I come to thee.
2. Out of my shameful failure and loss, | Jesus, I come, Jesus, I come;
Into the glorious gain of thy cross, | Jesus, I come to thee.
Out of earth’s sorrows into thy balm, | Out of life’s storms and into thy calm,
Out of distress into jubilant psalm, | Jesus, I come to thee.
3. Out of unrest and arrogant pride, | Jesus, I come, Jesus, I come;
Into thy blessed will to abide, | Jesus, I come to thee.
Out of myself to dwell in thy love, | Out of despair into raptures above,
Upward forever on wings like a dove, | Jesus, I come to thee.
4. Out of the fear and dread of the tomb, | Jesus, I come, Jesus, I come;
Into the joy and light of thy home, | Jesus, I come to thee.
Out of the depths of ruin untold, | Into the peace of thy sheltering fold,
Ever thy glorious face to behold, | Jesus, I come to thee.
Jesus, I come to thee. | Jesus, I come to thee.
WORDS OF INSTITUTION
INVITATION TO THE TABLE
Those who have professed faith in Christ for the forgiveness of sins within a church
body and who have been baptized are invited to partake of the Lord’s Supper here at
Redeemer. We receive the Lord’s Supper worthily only if we bear in mind that Christ
gave his body for the remission of our sins; it is his merit only that admits us to this
table. It is dangerous to eat the body and blood of the Lord otherwise. For this reason,
we ask those who do not meet the above conditions to refrain from eating. We do
encourage you to come forward for prayer from one of our ministers if you desire it, or
to remain seated and to pray and reflect on what you have heard and seen in the
service. The Christian who doubts his standing before God should labor to have his
doubts resolved. This brother or sister in Christ is especially encouraged to eat this
feast that he or she may be further strengthened in the faith.
PRAYER FOR THE ELEMENTS
THE COMMUNION
Please come forward, by row, to receive the bread and the cup. If you are not taking Communion, you
may come forward for prayer, or remain seated. Please note that the center cup and inner circle contain
grape juice, for those who desire it.
We break bread in the name of Father, Son and Holy Spirit! And we declare the great
mystery of faith: | Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.
Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us; | Therefore let us keep the feast.
These are the gifts of God for the people of God. | Thanks be to God!

HOW FIRM A FOUNDATION
Arr. Ortega
1. How firm a foundation, ye saints of the Lord,
Is laid for your faith in his excellent Word!
What more can he say than to you he hath said,
To you, who for refuge, to Jesus have fled?
2. Fear not, I am with thee, O be not dismayed,
For I am thy God and will still give thee aid;
I’ll strengthen thee, help thee, and cause thee to stand
Upheld by my righteous, omnipotent hand.
3. When through fiery trials thy pathways shall lie,
My grace, all sufficient, shall be thy supply;
The flame shall not hurt thee; I only design
Thy dross to consume, and thy gold to refine.
4. The soul that on Jesus hath leaned for repose,
I will not, I will not desert to his foes;
That soul, though all hell should endeavor to shake,
I’ll never, no never, no never forsake.
