CAESURA
Definition: A break anywhere within a line, usually indicated by a mark of punctuation.
It can often be used to indicate emotions/movement of the poem.
Eg: Extract from If Poisonous Minerals, John Donne
* caesura highlighted in the poem.
If poisonous minerals, and if that tree
Whose fruit threw death on else immortal us,
If lecherous goats, if serpents envious,
Cannot be damned, Alas! Why should I be?
Why should intent or reason, born in me,
Make sins, else equal, in me more heinous?
BLANK VERSE
Definition: Blank verse is any verse comprised of unrhymed lines all in the same meter,
usually iambic pentameter.
E.g Excerpt from Macbeth by William Shakespeare
Tomorrow, and tomorrow, and tomorrow,
Creeps in this petty pace from day to day,
To the last syllable of recorded time;
And all our yesterdays have lighted fools
The way to dusty death. Out, out, brief candle!
