Comparing Disney’s Hercules with the traditional myth
of Heracles
Read the story of Heracles you have been given. Answer these questions on the
differences between the film and text version of Heracles (Hercules). Use full sentences
and explain your answers in detail.
1. What is different about the relationship Hercules has with his mother in the film
version, compared to the story in the text?
2. In the film version who is trying to destroy Hercules, and how is this different to
the text version?
3. Why was Hercules trying to prove himself in the film version?
4. In the text version of the story, why was Hercules being sent on lots of tasks and
who was sending him?
5. In the film version Hercules fights with Hydra. Last week we looked at the story
of the Nine Headed Hydra. Look at the cartoon version of the Hydra story. Can
you explain two ways in which the film version differed from the text version?
6. Some aspects of the story have been modernised and do not fit with the traditional
features of Greek Myths. Can you pick two examples and explain why these
aspects seem out of place in a Greek myth..

was with him!)
