Photosynthesis-Summary
“Photo” part
Light Reaction
(Requires light)
What is happening?
Light energy is being converted into chemical
energy
Where is this reaction occurring?
In the thylakoids
What does the reaction need to occur?
Carbon dioxide, sunlight, and water
What is released from this reaction?
oxygen, electrons, and ATP
Electron transport chain: a series of proteins that
pass along energized electron carriers
NADPH: an electron carrier that stores the ATP
from the light reaction and carries it to the dark
reaction
Photolysis: splitting of water or when oxygen is
released into the air and H electrons go the dark
reaction.
“Synthesis” part
Dark Reaction
(No light required)
AKA The Calvin cycle
What is happening?
Carbon dioxide is being used to make glucose
Where is this reaction occurring?
In the stroma
What does the reaction need to occur?
CO2, electrons, and ATP
What is released from this reaction?
2 PGALs that form 1 glucose molecule
PGAL: a 3-carbon compound formed in the
Calvin cycle; 2 PGALs make 1 glucose molecule;
PGAL is later used in cellular respiration
