ISO 14001:2004

ISO 14001 is an international Environmental Management System standard that specifies
requirements for environmental management. It provides a framework which allows an
organization to control it’s Aspects (hazards) and Impacts (risks) on the environment.
ISO 14001:2004 is structured to aid business manage, monitor and continually improve their
environmental performance. Fundamental to the application of the Standard is the commitment
of an organization to implement a policy and take action, which would result in the prevention of
pollution, compliance with legal and regulator requirements and continual improvement over time.

Intent of the Standard:




Gain “commitment” of business as expressed through Environmental Policy (PLAN)
o Management system can only be as effective as the support given by Top
Management
o Implementation and operation of the EMS is focused upon “prevention” (Do)
o Important to be proactive, rather than reactive to EMS issues
Evaluate the performance of your EMS and conformance to regulatory compliance
(Check)
o Must comply with regulations, but have confidence that our EMS can identify
when we are at risk of failing or are out of compliance.
Goal to “continually improve” upon our EMS effectiveness, through Management
Review (Act)
o Intended result is that organization constantly gets better, stronger, leaner and
more efficient.
ISO 14001:2004 is a management system that recognizes and manages primary
environmental issues through:
o
Awareness and assessment of applicable legal requirements
o
Defining hazards and risks and setting targets for lessening their impact to your
business
o
Assigning responsibility, ensuring employee awareness and competence
concerning environmental, health and safety
o
Ensuring appropriate controls and monitoring capabilities are in place
o
Developing and implementing emergency response capability to limit and control
hazards which may impact the environment, personal health and public safety.

Key Technical Points that You Need to Know:

Internationally recognized management system standard.
Based upon a Plan, Do, Check, Act approach (P-D-C-A).
Sampling can be used with this Standard.
Audits must be conducted in a Stage 1 and Stage 2 format

Stage 1 – Readiness Review (1 – 2 days On-site), to include: Ensuring that all
legal and regulatory requirements are known and being met; that Aspects
(hazards) and Impacts (risks) have been identified for the site; that a process has
been established for evaluating “risk”; the EMS has been full implemented and
has undergone complete round of internal audits and a Management Review
activity has occurred.
Stage 2 – Registration Audit (audit time based upon Accreditation body
guidance) will consist of a complete system audit.
Stage 2 audit must be conducted “no less” than three (3) and “no more” than 50business days following the Stage 1 audit.
Focus of the clients EMS should be based upon their evaluation of risks
associated with their site and it’s operations.

Accreditation Status:
-
BVQI is accredited by ANAB to offer registrations to the ISO 14001 standard.
Other international accreditations can be issued (e.g.: UKAS)

Target Industries:
-
Applicable to all industries (i.e.: manufacturing, auto, aerospace)
Standard has been mandated for suppliers to the Automotive industry.


Links with other Standards:

ISO 14001:2000 can easily be “integrated” with ISO 9001:2000
OHSAS 18001 can easily be integrated into an ISO 14001 audit
o Many of our ISO 14001 auditors are qualified to both ISO 14001 and OHSAS
18001.

