Key concepts:
 Development of Jazz Timeline . Mid – Late 1800’s all the way until the present
Ragtime – Dixieland – Early Jazz 2 beat – Swing – Big Band – Bebop –
Cool/Smooth - Fusion. There will be an in class discussion Q&A with the timing of
these movements.
 Bebop changed the focus of Jazz from Dance music to Listening music form in
the 1940’s. Early pioneers were Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker.

Key people and pioneers of Jazz.

Duke Ellington credited with having written more songs than any composer,
living or dead, wrote an estimated 4700 compositions. Among these was the
legendary song ‘Mood Indigo’

Louis Armstrong innovative trumpeter and Jazz singer was the first to record
scat singing. Grew up in the notorious section of New Orleans called ‘Storyville’.
New Orleans is the birthplace of Jazz, a truly unique American art form.
Some of the early Jazz pioneers were piano players who made the transition
from Ragtime to Jazz by playing a piano style called ‘Stride Piano’. Eubie Blake
and Jelly Roll Morton were two of these legends. Jelly Roll used to carry a
business card that claimed he was the creator of Jazz and the world’s greatest
‘Hot Tune Writer’!

Fletcher Henderson a Chicago Jazz musician, composer and arranger is
credited with establishing the instrumentation of large Jazz bands that included 3
sections; Brass Section, Reed Section and the Rhythm Section. He also is
credited with establishing the early feel and structure of what was to become the
‘Swing’ movement in Jazz
