Characteristic of living things
 Movement Or Locomotion: All living things display
some form of movement at some time. This is
obvious in most animals, but subtler in plants, which
are sessile. Individual parts move and this movement
is very slow.
 Irritability (sensitivity) Or Responsiveness: Living
things are sensitive to their environment. They have
the ability to detect change and to respond to this.
 Producing Or Consuming ‘Food’: Food or nutrients
are either ingested or absorbed by living things such
as fungi and animals, or produced by the organism
itself e.g. plants
 Respiration: all organisms release energy from
organic matter in a complex series of chemical
reaction call respiration. This energy is then
available for use in life processes.
 Growth And Development: living things increase in
size and often become more complicated as they
progress through their life.
 Excretion: Harmful substances are produced during
the chemical reactions that take place in a living
organism and would poison the organism if allow to
accumulate. All living organisms excrete (remove)
metabolic waste.
 Reproduction: Living things are capable of
reproduction in order to replace members of their
species that have died from disease, predation, old
age etc. Without reproduction the species would
become extinct.
 Made Of One Or More Cells: All living things are
composed of similar, smaller units called cells and of
the products of these cells.
 Highly Organised
