Antibiotic Advice
You have been prescribed an antibiotic. This is a medicine that helps your body to fight infection
caused by bacteria. It is important that you follow the instructions on the label.
While taking your medicine, please remember: Take the full course, even if you start to feel better
 It may take up to 48 hours before you start to feel better
 You may take painkillers such as Paracetamol, Aspirin or Nurofen, if you need to, as
directed on the packet
 Antibiotics can reduce the effect of contraceptive pills. Women using the pill should take
extra precautions while taking antibiotics and for seven days after
 If you develop a rash, fever or swelling, stop taking the antibiotic and contact your doctor,
dentist, pharmacist or NHS 24 in case you have become allergic to the medicine
 If you feel that your condition is becoming worse, contact your dentist
 Some types of antibiotic can cause a slight "sick" feeling or mild diarrhoea. If there is
severe diarrhoea with blood in it, stop taking the antibiotic and contact your doctor,
dentist or NHS 24.
 If you are taking an antibiotic called Metronidazole, it is very important that you have no
alcoholic drinks as this will make you sick
 Most antibiotics are best taken about half an hour before food
 Anticoagulants like warfarin can be affected by antibiotics. You should contact your
doctor to have your blood checked
