Activities for Differentiation MCC1.OA.8
Extended:
Have pairs use number (1-12) and sign (+, -, =) cards to make related addition and subtraction sentences.
While one child is turned away, have the partner turn over the card for one addend in the additions sentence so it is
face down. The partner uses the subtraction sentence to name the missing addend. Have partners change roles and
repeat with other related facts.
On Target:
Give each child six blank index cards. Ask children to write the numbers 6, 4, and 10 and the signs +, -, =, on the
cards. Make an addition sentence with the cards. Have children use counters to model the sentence. Rearrange the
cards to show a subtraction sentence with the same numbers. Have children model the sentence with counters.
Repeat with other examples.
Support:
Write a missing addend problem on the board such as ___ + 6 = 8.
What number is the sum?
What addend do you know?
How many counters are left? So what is the missing addend?
Repeat with other examples.
