Digestive System
Pyloric sphincter- allows 1 teaspoon every 20 seconds
Pancreas- secretes:
 bicarbontae- neutralizes Hcl
 amylase- (enzyme) breaks down carbohydrates
 lipase- (enzyme) breaks down lipids (fats)
 proteolytic enzymes- breaks down proteins/ peptides
Gall bladder:
 stores bile
 releases bile when food in stomach
bile




detergent
breaks up lipid/lipid interactions
produced in liver, stored in gall bladder
BILE IS NOT AN ENZYME – this will be on test
Green in color
Blocked bile duct
 Bile cant reach small intestine (due to gull stone)
 Bile backs up into the liver and then blood
 Converted in blood to bilaruben (yellow molecule)
 Person turns yellow (jaundice)
Small intestines
Function –
 some digestion
 most absorption of nutrients
Plica, villi & microvilli  increase in surface area
 surface area available for absorption of nutrients is = to surface area of a football
field
