Focus on Literary Devices:
Narrator – The person who is telling the story.
Foreshadowing – A literary device where the author gives the reader clues about something that
comes later in the story.
Allusion – a reference to previous literature or popular culture, usually from The Bible, Greek
Mythology, or historical literature.
Study Questions:
1. Vocabulary Building  Define the following terms (you may use the internet on your phones):

2. What is the significance of the title? What does it tell you about the story?
3. Which type of narrative perspective is used in this story?
4. How does the narrator convince her parents to let her go camping?
5. Who do the narrator and Ellen meet outside the cabin? Describe them.
6. Why do you think the visitors were telling riddles?
7. What clues does the author use to foreshadow Ellen’s eating disorder?
8. What do you think the Whisky Jack flying over the valley symbolizes (represents)?
Once you have come up with an idea, research what it is an allusion to.
9. Complete a Freytag’s Pyramid. Refer to your notes on plot structure to clarify each
portion of the story. If not printed from classnet, draw it in your notes.
