Laboratory Report for "OXIDATION OF CYCLOHEXANOL..."
The lab report is to be word-processed (proof read it and check spelling) and should summarize
the experiment completed including the following items:
1. Title of the experiment should be centered on the top of the page.
2. Date of the actual experiment, author’s name (i.e. your name), section number, and
course name.
3. Purpose of the experiment—what is to be learned from this experiment. Use your own
words.
4. Introduction—why there is a need for this experiment and problem to be addressed
5. Experimental Part—how the hypothesis was tested and protocol used.
6. Results and Discussion—Raw data including product yield and percentage, GC peak
areas, IR frequency, etc.
7. Conclusions
On a new page, answer the following questions:
8. Write balanced half reactions for both oxidation (cyclohexanol to cyclohexanone) and
reduction (Cr2O72- to Cr3+ under the acidic condition). Combine them to give the balanced
equation for the overall reaction. (count the oxidation state and use electrons for charge
balance.) Remember both mass and charge should be balanced for the overall equation!)
9. Calculate the percentage yield of cyclohexanone obtained using the BALANCED
equation. Include the following in the calculation:
a. The number of moles of reactants employed (H2SO4 and H2O are in excess).
(Remember that Na2Cr2O7 2H2O was employed as the oxidizing agent, calculate
its molecular weight correctly to include 2 water molecules.)
b. Based on the stoichiometry in the balanced equation, which reagent is limiting?
c. The theoretical yield (grams) of cyclohexanone possible;
d. The actual yield (grams) of cyclohexanone obtained;
e. The percentage yield of cyclohexanone.
10. Based on your gas chromatogram, how pure is your cyclohexanone (the relative
percentage of cyclohexanol vs. cyclohexanone? Submit your chromatogram (cut down to
8.5" x 11") with your report labeling the signal corresponding to cyclohexanone and
cyclohexanol.
Interpret the 1H and 13C NMR spectra of cyclohexanol and cyclohexanone which appear on the
following pages. Fill out the Spectral Data Report Form.
