Renaissance
The renaissance began between1350-1600. The French word renitre means to be reborn.The
renaissance is a time of great creativity in arts and sciences. The approximate dates were around
1436. The renaissance began In Florence because there were a lot of goods there. Banking and
trading made Florence a rich city because Florence has a lot of crafting done there. The De
Medici family is a family who gained wealth through banking and trade. They helped make
Florence a wealthy and artistic city because Lorenzo Medici was a patron and artist’s and
scholars ran to Florence. The Humanism is the concern for human interests and values. Believers
in Humanism value religion.
A patron is a supporter of the arts. Leonardo da Vinci’s patron was Lorenzo Medici. Leonardo
da Vinci created the Mona Lisa, Head of a Man, The last Super, and more. Three-dimensional
perspective is a technique that puts three dimensions on a flat surface. It is an improvement over
previous artistic methods because it makes the paintings look more realistic. Michelangelo is a
famous renaissance artist. Some of the paintings and sculptures that he created were The Statue
of David, Sun- Moon, Last Judgment, and Ideal Face.
The verb reform means to form again, so the noun reformation means the state of being
reformed. The people that are named Protestants are named Protestants because they go against
something. They were protesting against the church inside Rome. Protestant reformation is
protesting against to change Christianity. The chief complaints of the German monk Martin
Luther were in his 95 thesis were to reform the church inside Rome. An indulgence is a pardon,
or forgiveness of sins, and is sold by the church. Luther complained about this because Leo x
was collecting money so that the people can get into heaven, but Luther knew that you can only
get into heaven if you show good faith. Johannes Gutenberg invented “moveable” type. It helped
speed the spread of ideas because the type was cheap enough for almost all writers.
King Henry viii broke away from the pope because the pope would not let him separate from
his wife. He helped found Anglican Church.After the split Henry vii became more powerful
because he seized the churches lands and wealth and cut Englands ties to the pope. Queen
Elizabeth is king Henry vii’s daughter. She is well known for making England a protestant
nation. William Shakespeare’s talents that make him well known are that he wrote 37 plays and
154 poems.
