Spelling Homework Choice Menu
Name: ____________________________________________________
One activity needs to be completed at home each day Monday thru Thursday.
Choose activities that work for you.
Required!!!– Word Sort
Move your cards around to sort them
into categories based on spelling
patterns and/or sounds. This
worksheet is provided from school.
Once you have them in the correct
category, copy them onto the
worksheet.
Snap/Clap
Say the word out loud. As you spell
it, clap when you say a consonant
and snap when you say a vowel. Be
careful with “y”! Do it again
without looking at the word.
Red/Blue Hold Your Nose
Shade the vowels in red and the
consonants in blue. Spell your
words out loud and “hold your nose”
every time you say a vowel. Be
careful with “y”.
Concentration
Make two copies of each word on an
index card, (or any opaque paper
will do!) Mix them up, turn them
over, and play a game of “memory!”
(Or…concentration!)

Say It, Spell It, Write It
Looking at the word, say it then
spell it. Next, say the word, turn it
over and spell it. Last, say the word,
turn it over, write it. Check how you
did.
Jump Rope
Using a pretend or real jump rope,
look at one word at a time and
“jump rope” the spelling out loud.
Try to create a rhythm or beat to
your spelling.
Sing
Looking at each word, make up a
tune to “sing” your word. Use
familiar tunes, like “Bingo”, “Row,
Row, Row Your Boat” and
“Twinkle Twinkle Little Star”.
Word Chunks
Look for word chunks inside your
words. These might be smaller
words, prefixes, or suffixes. Put
brackets around the word chunks.
Spell the word out loud using a
different voice for the “chunk”.
Twister
Write each letter of the alphabet
outside using sidewalk chalk or on a
shower curtain. As you say or spell
each word, twist to touch that letter
as you spell it.
Silly Sentences
Think of a silly sentence using the
letters in your word. This only
needs to be done for your most
difficult words. Example:
S – snapping
T – turtles
A – ate
M – mud
P – pies
Student Idea!
Wordsearch
Create a word search using your
words on a piece of graph paper
Say it while you write it!
Leap Frog Your Words
Hopscotch – Write words on the
sidewalk in hopscotch form – spell
while you’re hopping!
SPELLINGCITY.COM
If your child likes using the
computer, this is a website that
allows you to type in the words
and then creates games to help
study spelling.
