Articles
- Honors -
Hold onto this paper. You will use
this format for each unit that we do
in World History (you do not turn
this page into me… just your work.)
Find an article from the news or business section of a reputable national or international newspaper which focuses on a
country or region of interest to you. You may choose either a print story or research articles on the internet. You may
NOT write an article about events occurring in the United States– this is WORLD history, and a good opportunity to
learn about other places in our global community. Stories should involve issues that are significant and truly historical
(avoid “pop” culture). It must have a story text equivalent to at least ½ page of a standard 8x10 piece of paper . Each
current events article must be written within the same dates as the unit we are working on in class. You will turn in your
current events article as the last assignment in your binders for each unit. The due date for each current events
article is the day BEFORE your binders are due (ie. the day BEFORE exam day).
Pick topics that are interesting to you, not just the first thing you see. Try to browse different sites each time for variety:
Suggested online sources: World News (wn.com); BBC News (www.bbc.co.uk/news/; Reuters (www.reuters.com);
CNN.com International (edition.cnn.com/); Worldpress.org (www.worldpress.org/)
Suggested print papers: San Francisco Chronicle, USA Today, Los Angeles Times, New York Times
*If you use a print article, cut it out neatly (don’t tear it). Make sure you have the entire article. Many continue
on other pages. Attach with glue, tape or staples (no paper clips) the article on a piece or pieces of paper that
you can put in your binder when three hole punched. Fix the article in such a way that I can easily unfold it if
necessary to view the whole article. Write the name of the newspaper and the date of the article on the same
page to which you have affixed your article.
YOU MUST: Read the headline and look up any words you don’t know. Understand the headline before you read the
article. Look at any photos, graphics, and captions. Finally, read the article, highlighting important parts.
Stapled on top of your article, you will have your current events analysis. This must be typed (You may use the library
computers and printers if you do not have a computer at home. Plan ahead!). Follow the specifications for each quad.
In this quad write a 50-60 word summary of the entire
article. Do not summarize only the opening paragraph of the
news story. This summary should all be in your own words
(nothing quoted from the article). It should be a summary of
the main ideas of the whole article.
In this quad write a few (2-3) good questions that can
serve as discussion questions for your group. They should
be phrased so that anyone who listens to your summary of
the article would be able to answer your question with an
informed opinion. Ask no basic recall questions.
In this quad analyze why this article is important for us to
read. Discuss why you think the newspaper is covering this
issue/story. Or write about why the story is relevant for us
to know about it. Or discuss what this article shows about
our world. This should be in your own words; no quoting
from article, though you should use new details from the
article not found in your summary. (75-90 words)
In this quad write about the connections you can make
regarding this current event. These connections can be to
previous articles you’ve read, or to stories that you may
have heard on television or radio, or to things we have
studied in class, another class, or on your own. Do not
write about connections here to your own life and
experience. (75-90 words)
This will be scored as a credit/no credit assignment. Make sure you’ve done the following for credit:
_____ Include entire article secured on a piece of paper with the name of the paper, the headline, and the date
_____ Your responses for the questions quad are typed
_____ Writing meets word count guidelines described above
_____ Use article that is 12+ column inches in print, and/or at least ½ a regular size piece of paper
_____ Use article from news/business section about different world regions (focus on new regions each time!)
_____ Writing shows reading of the entire article
_____ All work is in your own words
_____ The current event comes from the range of time specified (same timeframe as the current unit)
