I. Global Water Use
The 3 main ways water is used globally are ______________________ (highest %) and
__________________________(middle %) and ___________________________.
A. Residential Water Use– accounts for _____% of water use.
1. Water Treatment-
Potable- http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-potable-water.htm
____________________________________________________________________
Pathogens- http://www.wisegeek.org/what-are-pathogens.htm
____________________________________________________________________
B. Industrial Water Use– accounts for _____% of water use.
C. Agricultural Water Use – accounts for _____% of water use.
1. Irrigation- ________________________________________________________
II. Water Management Projects
-
A. Water Diversion Projects- In order to supply the dry regions with water, we
can d __ __ __ __ __ all or part of a river into canals that carry water across great
distances.
B. Dams and Reservoirs
Dams- http://geography.about.com/od/waterandice/a/damsreservoirs.htm
_______________________________________________________________________
Reservoirs- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reservoir
_______________________________________________________________________
III. Water Conservation
A. Water Conservation in Agriculture
Drip irrigation systems- http://youtu.be/o7v_zC0LNw0 (general statement)
_________________________________________________________________________
_________________________________________________________________________
-
B. Water conservation in industry - In the industry today, the most widely used
water conservation practices involve the recycling of cooling water and wastewater.
Instead of dumping used water into the nearby river, the industries recycle and reuse
the water. - http://youtu.be/s0idPxypG1w
___________________________________________________________________
C. Water conservation at home
Xeriscaping- http://youtu.be/R-iLRC-gby8
______________________________________________________________________
D. What you can do to conserve water (see table 2)
-
IV. Solutions for the Future
A. Desalination- http://youtu.be/mZ7bgkFgqJQ
___________________________________________________________________
___________________________________________________________________
B. Transporting Water- One way of supplying water to places without fresh water is by
transportation. People are trying to come up with ways that will help us transport fresh water
from places such as Alaska (half of the available fresh water reserves in the U.S. are located
in Alaska), to places with water deficiency such as California.
Notes Packet- Chapter 11, Section 3: Water Pollution
Water Pollution- -The two main causes of water pollution are industrialization and rapid
human population growth.

I. Point-Source Pollution-_____________________________________________________
II. Nonpoint-Source Pollution-__________________________________________________
A. Examples of Nonpoint-source pollution (Table 4)
-
-
-
III. Principal Water Pollutants (Table 5)
Waste water http://youtu.be/a2qqF77Bq88?list=PLbnvwtAGroLtQSY6nco5uKcWtgxk0HTpi
IV. Wastewater-___________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________________
A. Treating Wastewater--most of the wastewater from homes contains biodegradable
materials that can be broken down by living organisms. However, some of the toxic materials
can’t be removed by a standard treatment.

C. Wastewater Treatment Process (Figure 17) - http://youtu.be/spofVioFF6w
Primary Treatment-
1. Filtration-_________________________________________________________
2. First Settling Tank-__________________________________________________
Secondary Treatment-
3. Aeration Tank-______________________________________________________
4. Second Settling Tank-________________________________________________
5. Chlorination-_______________________________________________________
V. Artificial Eutrophication- http://youtu.be/UGqZsSuG7ao
_______________________________________________________________________
__________________________________________________________________________
__________________________________________________________________________
VI. Thermal Pollution- http://youtu.be/QmBalvjM2BA
_____________________________________________________________________
______________________________________________________
VII. Groundwater Pollution- http://youtu.be/_nSVvFGP-hc and http://youtu.be/5xs1jLlbztE
_______________________________________________________________________
______________________________________________________
A. Cleaning Up Groundwater Pollution-. As a result of the clean water act of 1972,
many states have passed stricter water quality standards. Many toxic metals are now
removed from wastewater before the water is discharged.
- http://youtu.be/-wdkGhJnCac (write a general statement. No need for great detail)
______________________________________________________________________
______________________________________________________________________
VIII. Ocean Pollution--Ships can legally dump wastewater and garbage overboard in some
parts of the ocean. But the largest portion of ocean water pollution comes from the land
activities: oil, toxic waste and medical waste. The coastal plant life is most affected by the
pollution since they are located closest to the pollution source.
A. Oil Spills-- Ocean water is polluted by many accidental oil spills. Most of the oil that
pollutes the oceans comes from cities and towns. Every year, around 300 million gallons of
oil enter the ocean from nonpoint sources on land.
Exxon Valdez-1989-where?- http://youtu.be/0CmulSU0wyY - __________________
_________________________________________________________________________
IX. Water Pollution and Ecosystems--Water pollution can cause immediate damage to an
ecosystem. Toxic chemical spills in rivers can kill nearly all living things for miles downstream.
A. Biomagnification- http://youtu.be/RP9hmlRqbxs

X. Cleaning Up Water Pollution (Table 6) --There are many Federal Laws designed to
improve water quality in the United States. Some of them are:
Clean Water Act of 1972- http://youtu.be/E9PopApDqvo

_________________________________________________________________
Oil Pollution Act of 1990- http://youtu.be/H9RsCtNZw-A
