Dead Poets’ Society – Chapter 11
It is winter at Welton Academy and Todd and Neil take a walk talking about Neil’s biggest
dream, which is becoming an actor. Neil is very glad, since he is close to that dream and
suggests Todd to visit the rehearsals.
When Neil returns to his room he is shocked to meet his father, who heard of the theatre
play and is very angry at his son. He forbids him to become an actor and tells him to quit the
rehearsals. Because he is afraid of his father, he does not protest against the order.
At dinner the other students talk about Neil’s problems and try to find a solution. They
suggest that he should talk to Mr. Keating about it in order to get some advices.
Mr. Keating’s opinion is that Neil should try to convince his father about his passion for
acting, however it seems impossible to Neil, but he ends up accepting the advice.
The other members of the Dead Poets’ Society are in the cave, where Knox is writing a love
poem for Chris which, according to Pitts, he should read out to her.
Motivated by that, Knox drives to Ridgeway High the next morning to follow Pitts’ idea, but
Chris does not want to hear the poem and tells him to leave. He does not listen to her and
reads out his poem in front of Chris’ class, causing embarrassment. Knox says that he loves
Chris and leaves afterwards.
