Classroom News:
On Tuesday our class gave a performance of The Enormous Watermelon to our Third Grade
Buddy class. Everyone had memorized the nursery rhymes and did a wonderful job. There
were many compliments from our buddy audience. Our class was excited to shine in our first
public speaking piece of the year, and our Third Grades buddies had so much fun remembering
doing this piece when they were in Kindergarten! We are continuing to work with nursery
rhymes from Mother Goose – finding our sight words in Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star, practicing
writing our names in beautiful “school” writing as we put ourselves into the Jack Be Nimble
rhyme, and listening to/identifying rhyming words. And for our more advanced readers, there
is a lot of sophisticated vocabulary in nursery rhymes to learn!
The students have enjoyed learning new math games this week and working on them during
Math Workshop this week. This unit’s concepts are around counting by ones, counting with one
to one correspondence, matching sets, numeral identification, numeral writing and, as always,
applying an appropriate strategy to “double-check”. We are also continuing to work with
identifying and sorting by attributes.
Each day our “calendar helper” is observing and recording the weather. One of our science
goals is to understand changes in weather over time. We will look back at the end of the year
and compare our October weather graph with a month from the winter and one from the
spring.
This week in Chinese class we reviewed saying “hello” and “goodbye” and began working on
learning the names of the colors (the word for colors is “yan se”). We focused on red: hong se
and yellow: huang se
On Wednesday we practiced an Earthquake Drill and a Fire Drill with all of Bolton. Ask your
child to tell you what they would do at school (drop and cover for an earthquake and go outside
for a fire). October is always a good month to go over your family’s plan in case of a fire. Do
you have a plan for how to get out of the house? Do you have a meeting place for everyone to
go to when they get outside?
On Friday our students will participate in the annual Bolton Jog-a-thon. The students are
looking forward to a wonderful time in Hammerle Park helping to raise funds to assist our PTA
with all of the support that they give to Bolton.
Thank you:
Thanks so much to Bolton PTA and the many parents who volunteered to bring in meals for
teachers during our conference days. It is so greatly appreciated!!
Conferences:
I enjoyed meeting with all of you during our Fall conference. The information that you shared
with me about your children is very helpful. I will be reporting to you on the progress your
child is making towards the goals we set during this conference on the December report card.
Please remember that if you have any questions you may always call or email me.
Snack and Lunch:
Please pack your child’s morning snack separately from their lunch container. It becomes quite
crowded in front of the cubbies as children are having to take the time to unzip their lunch pails
to find their morning snacks and restow lunches into the cubbies. Also it is greatly appreciated if
“liquid” things like yogurt and applesauce are saved for lunch time where we eat at the tables
and not snack time which is on the carpet. Thanks!
Homework:
Counting My Family – Your child should draw a picture of the members in the family. Help your
child to think about drawing with perspective – who is the tallest? Shortest? It would also be a
good idea to label the drawing so that your child is working on learning to spell the names of
family members. Then he/she needs to count the members of his/her family and write the
numeral. This page does not need to come back to school.
