U.S. Imperialism Review Sheet
Name_______________
Country/
Region
What did the U.S. want How did the U.S. acquire
from this
it?
region/country?
China
US pursued an OPEN
DOOR POLICY towards
China. This opened
trade with China in
order to sell US goods.
X
The Chinese reacted to this
policy and to foreign
intervention in their
country with the Boxer
Rebellion.
Cuba
Americans were
sympathetic with
Cubans' desire to gain
independence from
Spain. US established
its control over the
island: PLATT
AMENDMENT.
Created Guantanamo
Bay naval base, and
held right to intervene
in Cuba.
The US went against its
own TELLER AMENDMENT
and refused to allow Cuba
to be a free country. The
US set up a military
government in Cuba,
established a naval base,
intervened in Cuba's
domestic affairs, and
American business invested
heavily in Cuba's economy.
Hawaii
The Hawaiian Islands
had always been a
focus of American
business interests.
The US controlled the
islands and sent troops
to overthrow Queen
Liliuokalani and support
a puppet government.
Acquired as a result of
the Spanish American
War of 1898, where the
US convincingly defeated
the Spanish in a war that
only lasted a few months.
With its victory the
United States emerged as
a new world power! The
war resulted in the US
taking control of the
Cuba, the Philippines,
Puerto Rico, and Guam.
Hawaii was ANNEXED as
Congress recognized its
importance as a port for
the navy. As a result,
Hawaii became a US
territory in 1891. In
1959, it officially became
a state.
Mexico
The US played a strong
role in Mexico, buying
up land, banks, mines,
and other properties.
US (Wilson) wanted to
promote "democracy"
in Mexico.
X
The US nearly went to war
with Mexico as it sent
troops to Veracruz.
Mexicans opposed this US
action. Due to numerous
invasions (including pursuit
of Pancho Villa) Mexicans
mistrust the US.
Problems/Conflicts
that arose because of U.S.
imperialism:
American intervention in
Hawaii produced deep
resentment among native
Hawaiians. Additionally,
many believed it was unAmerican to deprive a
people of their sovereignty.

Territory
Was viewed by the US
as its "backyard."
Encouraged revolt in
Panama in order to
build a canal.

Puerto
Rico
Once acquired from
Spain in 1898, the US
became deeply involved
in Puerto Rico. It
instituted a military
government and began
to build Puerto Rico's
infrastructure.
Acquired as a result of
the Spanish American
War of 1898, where the

United States emerged as
a new world power! The

Puerto Rico, and Guam.
After 10 years of
construction the canal
opened in 1914. Although
the canal helped to improve
international trade, it
angered many Latin
Americans because the US
treated the canal as its own
property.
In 1899 fighting broke out
between Filipinos fighting
for independence and
American forces. This was
a costly war, more than
200,000 Filipinos and 5,000
Americans lost their lives.
The US set up a central
government, built schools,
and built the island's
infrastructure. The US
granted the Filipinos
independence on July 4,
1946.
Since Puerto Rico remained
an American possession,
many Puerto Ricans grew
frustrated with American
rule. They wanted an
independent nation!
In 1917 the Jones Act
made Puerto Rico a US
territory.
In 1952 the island became
a US commonwealth.
