Unit: Infectious Diseases Lesson: Spread/Treatment of Diseases
Time: 50 minutes
School: University High School
Target Group: Grade 10 Health
NATIONAL HEALTH EDUCATION STANDARDS: Standard 1- Students will comprehend concepts related
to health promotion and disease prevention
WV HEALTH CONTENT STANDARDS
HE. HS. 1.04- Students will differentiate between the causes of communicable (e.g., STDs, HIV/AIDS,
bacterial/viral infections) and noncommunicable (e.g., heredity, lifestyle, environment) diseases.
HE. HS. 1.05- Students will identify and apply skills to prevent communicable (e.g., STDs, HIV/AIDS,
bacterial/viral infections) and noncommunicable (e.g., heredity, lifestyle, environment) diseases.
MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT:

2. Infectious Disease packet
3. Transparency 73 How Infections Spread
4. Projector
5. Concept Review worksheets (What are Infectious Diseases?)
6. Notebook paper
7. Pen/pencil
ATTENTION GETTER:
Ask this question. The swine flu is being considered to be the first flu pandemic since 1976, the last time the swine
flu was around. In your opinion, what changes do you think you will take in your everyday processes to help stay
protected from the swine flu? What changes do you think you will see around the school and the community?
Discuss- Ask for several students to volunteer and give some of their answers to spark a class discussion. Add
personal stories and any input that you feel is necessary to the topic. -5 minutes
Objective 1. Students will match answers regarding infectious diseases, their causes, and how they are
spread on a worksheet with 70% accuracy.
Procedure/Method 1. Have the students take out their textbooks and read along with the class discussion. The
discussion will begin corresponding with page 318 in the text. Discuss:
How are infectious diseases spread?
-Person to person
-Coughing and sneezing sends thousands of tiny drops of saliva and mucus into the air.
-These drops can remain in the air for minutes and they can carry many pathogens with them.
-Anyone who breaths in the droplets or touches the droplets may become sick.
-Kissing, drinking from the same glass, or having sexual contact can also spread pathogens.
-Mononucleosis- the kissing disease
-Food and Water
-Pathogens of an infected person or animal can contaminate food.
-This is why food workers are forced to wash their hands thoroughly.
-Foodborne disease can also be spread when food itself is contaminated.
-Foodborne diseases include hepatitis A and botulism.
-Water is relatively safe to drink in the United States, but a filtering system or boiling water is
still recommended.
-Diseases caused by contaminated water include typhoid, cholera, giardiasis, and
dysentery.
-Environment
-Although many pathogens cannot live outside of the body for a long time, some are tougher and
can survive on objects in the environment.
-These pathogens can be on a telephone or on money in your pocket.
-Many pathogens live in soil and can enter through cuts in your skin.
-Tetanus bacteria is an example that is found in the soil.
-Animals
-Many pathogens live on or in animals’ bodies and can carry diseases from person to person.
-Children can often contract ringworm by petting a dog or cat that has the fungus.
-Mosquitoes carry malaria, yellow fever, and encephalitis.
-Certain ticks can carry Lyme disease and Rocky Mountain spotted fever.- 15 minutes
Procedure/Method 2. Students will take out their Infectious Disease packets and complete page three working
alone. The teacher should walk around the room and answer any questions students may have.- 5 minutes.
Objective 2. Students will match different diseases and the pathogens that cause them on a worksheet with
70% accuracy.
Procedure/Method 3. Have the students take out their textbooks and read along with the class discussion. The

How Infectious Diseases are treated
-Treating Bacterial Diseases
-Antibiotics- medicines used to kill or slow bacteria
-Antibiotics work by preventing the growth and division of bacterial cells.
-Doctors today are worried about antibiotic resistance, or a condition in which bacteria can no
longer be killed by a particular antibiotic.
-This is caused by the improper use of antibiotics.
-Always finish your medications!
-Treating Viral Diseases
-There is less known to destroy viruses then there are bacteria.
-Viruses do not grow as living cells, so they cannot be treated with the same medications.
-Most antiviral medications concentrate on relieving symptoms and stopping the production of
viruses inside the human cells.
-Treating Fungal Infections
-Not as common as bacterial and viral infections.
-Many fungal infections can be treated with over-the-counter medication.
-Other fungal infections are more serious and require stronger prescribed medications.
-Treating Protozoan Infections
-Prevention is the best way to protect against protozoan diseases.
-Maintaining food sanitation and hygiene will help prevent protozoan from surviving.
-Protozoan diseases require people to see doctors and get prescription medication.
-Treating Parasitic Infections
-Roundworm, tapeworm, and head lice are all parasitic infections.
-Prevent head lice by not sharing combs or sharing clothes with others.
-Head lice can be treated with medicated shampoos.- 10 minutes
Procedure/Method 4. Students will take out their Infectious Disease packets and complete page four working
alone. The teacher should walk around the room and answer any questions students may have.- 5 minutes.
Procedure/Method 5: Following the worksheet, end the class with having a class discussion of the review
questions located on page 321 in the textbook. Discuss these questions aloud with the class and have students work
together to come up with the answers to the questions.- 10 minutes
EVALUATION: TIME—10 minutes
The two worksheets completed during class will serve as the assessment for the lesson. The worksheets are to be
completed during class and they will be graded at a later date.
