Key Terms















GLOBE is a special kind of map of the world—it is a sphere…an accurate small scale model of Earth
PHYSICAL MAPS focus on physical features such as rivers, mountains, plains, etc. It is used to
identify land masses and waterways
POLITICAL MAPS identify political borders (countries and states). They are used to identify
countries, states, and cities
THEMATIC MAPS identify locations based on a theme, like “oil producing nations” or They are used
to identify locations based on traits
Latitude- Lines that circle earth from east to west
Longitude - Lines that run from north to south
Equator- This divides the earth into the northern and southern hemispheres
Prime Meridian- This divides the earth into the northern and southern hemispheres
Perth, Australia is 52S, 118E on a map using latitudinal and longitudinal coordinates. This is an
example of absolute location.
Asia is northeast of Australia. This is an example of relative location.
Physical features: mountains, plains, plateaus, rivers, lakes
4 Oceans: Atlantic, Pacific, Indian, Arctic
7 Continents: North America, South America, Europe, Asia, Antarctica, Africa, and Australia
Natural Resources: coal, lumber, fish, potatoes, natural gas, cattle, minerals
Lake- body of water completely surrounded by land
Peninsula- body of land with water on three sides
Cape- thinner than a peninsula, a thin body of land with water on three sides
Island- body of land completely surrounded by water
Plain- physical region where most farming takes place
Source- place where rivers get their water
Mouth- place where rivers empty water into a larger body of water
Tributary- smaller river or stream that empties into a larger body of water

