What is Physical Chemistry?
“It is the science of explaining physical
phenomenon in chemical terms”
So what do we study in
Physical Chemistry?
Static or Equilibrium properties of the system – energy within the system, dynamics of
flow of energy etc. Note that static and dynamic are with respect to time – so something
may be happening in the system, but till we are not bothered about how that behavior is
changing with time, it is still static.
Dynamic or the Changes occurring in the system – everything that is changing with time
within the system e.g. how molecules interact over a period of time, how they realign
under changing conditions of pressure, temperature etc.
The Structure of the system – how the minutest parts of the system are held together
and build up bit-by-bit into the complete system. This goes real deep; things like
quantum theory, statistical thermodynamics etc.
