(a) Computer control is the use of a computer to MONITOR and control an
EXTERNAL process.
(b) To control any process a computer needs input from SENSORS which
provide it with DATA about the state of the process that it is controlling.
(c) Sensors provide data about a PHYSICAL quantity. The output signal from
most sensors is in ANALOGUE form.
(d) Computers cannot process the analogue data provided by a sensor, it
must first be converted into DIGITAL using an ANALOGUE-TO-DIGITAL
converter.
(e) The computer PROCESSES the data provided by the sensors by using a
CONTROL program.
(f) The control program instructs the computer how to respond to the input
from the sensors. If the process needs to be modified in any way the
computer sends an OUTPUT signal to the HARDWARE which is under its
control.
