Hitler Youth
An Augmented Reality Project
“The weak must be chiseled away. I want young men and women who can suffer pain. A
young German must be as swift as a greyhound, as tough as leather, and as hard as Krupp's
steel."
Background
In Hitler’s Grand Plot, students will discover how Hitler coached, trained, educated and
indoctrinated his people in his efforts to conquer and rule Europe. He wanted to recapture
land he had lost during World War 1 so he increased his army by training young healthy Aryans
who were malleable and would conform to new regime without much resistance. He wanted a
pure and strong race so he murdered millions of Jews, non-Germans and people who were
greatly disabled. He also wanted to rid the world of Communism and he saw the Jews as the
“biological root" of Communism.
This is a pre-reading activity. Students will be placed in groups of fours and each group will
gather information about Hitler’s youth, the Jews, the laws, the education system to predict
the plot of the book and create a timeline. While gathering information students must work as
a team to organize their findings and report to the class. The overall aim of the game is to get
students excited about the book they are about to read and assist them in developing their
cognitive skills.
Unit Goals
The aim of this game is to foster intellectual development of students by encouraging study of
nonfiction literature and writing. Students will work in groups to gather, record, analyze and
critique data. Through the lens of Inter-Relationships and Self-Reliance, they will consider how
they build relationships, how their relationships impact others, and their responsibility to
society. Students will use background information to interpret the given data. At the end of the
lesson students should be able to achieve the following objectives.
Performance Objectives
English Language (Grade 9)
Objectives
a) Predict author’s main idea.
b) Identify key vocabulary such as holocaust, brainwash, racial superiority and make
judgments.
c) Identify names, dates and events then organize information in sequential order.
d) Summarize information gathered.
e) Construct a detailed timeline of Hitler’s reign in Germany.
Objectives & Standards
From the State Standards of Learning
English Language SOLS 9.4
9.4 The student will read, comprehend, and analyze a variety of literary texts including narratives,
narrative nonfiction, poetry, and drama.
b) Summarize text relating supporting details.
g) Analyze the cultural or social function of a literary text.
h) Explain the influence of historical context on the form, style, and point of view of a written work.
k) Analyze how an author’s specific word choices and syntax achieve special effects and support the
author’s purpose.
l) Make predictions, inferences, draw conclusions, and connect prior knowledge to support reading
comprehension
Higher Order Thinking Skills
Based on Bloom’s Taxonomy (http://www.cant-think.com/HigherOrderThinkingSkills.html)
1. Students will work in groups to identify Hitler, describe the Hitler Youth and state their purpose;
gather and record information about Hitler’s plans for Germany.
2. Students will figure out how Hitler became powerful and the strategies he employed in
manipulating the people of Germany; ask questions about the education system and why the Jews
did not put up much resistance
3. Students will apply previous knowledge to explain the holocaust and who were affected the most;
students should be able to discuss the horror and trauma the Jews, the disabled and Non-German
endured under Hitler’s regime.
4. Students will categorize the German people according to race, disabilities, religion and compare and
contrast the problems faced by the different groups in Germany.
5. Students will create a picture timeline using the data they have collected. Students will have to
assess information to make judgment about the time certain events occurred.
6. Students will evaluate each group’s timeline for accuracy and relevant information.
