PHYSICS SEMESTER TEST REVIEW SHEET
(The problems are similar to what you might find on the test.
If you LOSE this review sheet over break, you will NOT receive another.
However, the file will be put on my website and you can print off another copy.)

What is frequency?
What is wavelength?
Name some portions of the electromagnetic spectrum.
What does the word “transparent” mean? Give an example of something that is transparent.
What does the word “opaque” mean? Give an example of something that is opaque.
What does the word “translucent” mean? Give an example of something that is translucent.
What are the two ways light can move?
What is the speed of light?
Problem: What is the frequency of yellow light, which has a wavelength of 556 nanometers
(nanometers is 1 x 10-9 meters)?
10. Problem: The distance to the moon can be found with the help of mirrors left on the moon by
astronauts. A pulse of light is sent to the moon and returns to the Earth in 2.562 sec. Calculate the
distance to the moon.
11. What is the spectrum?
12. What are the primary colors of light? The secondary colors? What makes what?
13. If you take all three primary colors of light, and mix them, what color will result?
14. Why is the sky blue?
15. Why are sunsets red/orange?
16. What is polarization of light, and how does it work?
17. What is reflection? What is refraction?
18. What happens when light bounces off a flat (plane) mirror? (hint: something about angles)
19. What is Snell’s Law?
20. Problem: A light ray goes from air into water (n=1.33) at 45 degrees. At what angle is it while in the
water?
21. What is the shape of a concave mirror? A convex mirror?
22. Be able to do ray diagrams for convex and concave mirrors.
23. What does a concave lens look like? A convex lens?
24. Be able to do ray diagrams for convex and concave lenses.
25. In general, how is laser eye surgery performed?
26. What does LASER stand for? What does a laser do? What are the three characteristics of lasers?
What are the helium-neon lasers used for? What is an argon laser used for?
Speed, Acceleration, Projectiles, Vectors and Forces
1. What is speed? What is the equation for speed? Problem: Calculate the speed if distance equals
3.8m and time is .17seconds.

2. What is acceleration? What is the equation for acceleration? Problem: Calculate the acceleration of
a car that can go from rest to 60km/h in 3.2 seconds.
3. What is the difference between speed and velocity?
4. What is a motion diagram? Draw one and explain it.
5. Be able to use the 4 “more complicated” equations to solve for v0 or v1, or d1, or t, or a. Problem:
If a Ferrari, with an initial velocity of 10 m/s, accelerates at a rate of 50 m/s/s for 3 seconds, what will
its final velocity be?
6. A vector quantity tells you both ______________ and _______________?
7. What is a projectile? Be able to do ONE or TWO projectile problems, such as “A rock is thrown off
a cliff with a Vox of 15m/s…it lands 47 feet away from the bottom of the cliff. How high is the
cliff?”
8. What is the Law of Cosines?
9. Problem: A plane flying due north at 100 m/s is blown towards due west at 50 m/s by a strong wind.
Find the plane’s resultant velocity and direction.
10. Problem: A car drives 200km due southeast. If the driver had to drive directly east, and then turn
and drive south, how far each direction should they drive? (What are the east and south
components?)
11. Problem: A car is driving east for 70 km when it makes a 53 degree turn to the left and goes another
17 km. What is the displacement for this car?
12. What is force? Forces are measured in what?
13. What are Newton’s 3 Laws?
14. What is inertia?
15. Be able to use Newton’s 2nd law to do various calculations.
16. If two equal forces act on an object in the same direction, what is the net force? Unequal forces? If
two equal forces act on the object in opposite directions, what happens to the net force? Unequal
forces?
17. Be able to do a force diagram for a given example.
18. What is friction? What can we use to reduce friction? Why do we need some amount of friction in
the world?
19. Air resistance is a very common form of ________________________.
20. What is periodic motion?
21. What is the equation for the period of a pendulum? Be able to solve a question or two using this
equation. Does the period depend at all on the mass of the bob or the amplitude?
22. What happened at the Tacoma Narrows bridge?
Remember to write down all work you do on your problems for partial credit. If you happen to punch it in to
your calculator incorrectly, I can then give you partial credit for at least setting up the problem correctly.
YOU NEED YOUR OWN CALCULATOR….AND WILL BE ABLE TO USE
YOUR NOTECARD (ONCE APPROVED BY THE TEACHER) ON THIS TEST!!!
