Goals: The student will
 develop an appreciation for statistical analysis.
 develop confidence and skill in doing quantitative work and problem solving.
 learn how to critically read materials and critically listen to presentations containing
quantitative arguments.
 improve mathematics skills and word-problem solving skills.
 learn how to collect, organize, and present data.
 learn how to draw conclusions and make decisions based on statistical analysis.
 learn when to apply and how to use some of the common statistical procedures.
 improve ability to effectively communicate (written and oral) rationale and conclusions
regarding statistical methods.
 learn how statistical techniques and tools can be used in everyday life.
Specific Objectives: The student will learn to
 describe important features of distributions.
 use various graphs to display distributions by hand, computer, and calculator.
 calculate and describe center and spread of distributions.
 solve probability and percentage problems involving the normal distribution.
 interpret describe relationships between two quantitative variables.
 discuss and identify the differences between observational studies and experiments.
 choose a simple random sample using a table of random digits, calculator, or computer.
 describe and generate sampling distributions of common statistics.
 use and apply the Law of Large Numbers and the Central Limit Theorem..
 calculate and interpret confidence intervals for common parameters.
 determine the necessary sample size for confidence intervals with specific properties.
 perform and interpret hypothesis tests involving common parameters.
Class times:
Lecture: Monday, Wednesday 6:00 PM – 7:44 PM DDH 105 H
Lab: Monday, Wednesday: 7:45 PM – 9:00 PM WSL 005
Lecture: Attendance is required (repeated cuts and/or tardiness will result in a lower grade).
Bring your textbook and a statistical calculator such as TI-83 to every class. (TI- 83 can be
rented for $15 from Science Stockroom for the quarter.) Students are advised to read the material
ahead of the lecture to encourage discussion.
Homework: Homework will be assigned after each section is covered in the class and will be
graded. Homework is due every Monday, unless stated otherwise. Late homework will be
acceptable up to the beginning of next class but only for 50% of credit. It is advisable that you
finish homework assignment before the beginning of next lecture.
Labs: Weekly labs will be split into two parts. One part will be done on Monday and other will
be done on Wednesday, unless announced otherwise. You are required to work in groups and
each group will hand in a single solution set. Labs are due immediately if you leave class early.
You will not get any credit for a missed lab.
Exams: There will be two exams and a comprehensive final. If you know in advance that, you
are going to miss an exam, you must make prior arrangements with me.
Quizzes: There will be a weekly quiz on Wednesday, except the exam weeks. Best five quizzes
will count towards the grade. No makeup quizzes will be given.

Final Grade: The following percentage guidelines will be used for assigning a final grade:
A : 100 – 93
A- : A- 92 – 90
B+ : 89 – 88
B : 87 – 83
B- : 82 – 80
C+: 79 – 78
C : 77 – 73
C- : 72 – 70
D+: 69 – 68
D : 67 – 63
D- : 62 – 60
F : < 60
