Time Periods in American Literature
Early American literature was defined by chose to write bout their own
experiences. Some important works of the period were Character of a Truly Virtuous
Person, Person Narrative. “Sinners of an Angry God”, Freedom of Will, The Nature of
True Virtue by Jonathan Edwards. These works dealt with the themes of journals of
travelers and the new world they walked upon. The major historical events of the time
also influenced these writers by the wars they had against Indians and about the new land.
For example writers loved to write about these wars because they were action packed and
always had a story to write about.
Early National literature was defined by nonfiction and philosopher pragmatism.
Some important works of the period were A Dissertation on Liberty and necessity. “Poor
Richards Almanac” later became Saturdays evening post by Benjamin Franklin. These
works dealt with the themes of calm of the monied aristocrat and nonfiction documents
written as a plain. The major historical events of the time also influenced these writers by
the structural and political writings. For example would be the constitution.
19th century literature was defined by romanticism started as a reaction against the
perceived strictures of the preceding age. Some important works of the period were
“Thanatopsis”, poems which established his literary reputation, including “Inscription
for the Entrance to a wood” and “To a Waterfowl” by William Cullen Bryant. These

works dealt with the themes of Romanticism and Transcenendentalism. The major
historical events of the time also influenced these writers by American Renaissance
because so many writers were busy recording their work.
