REMINDER:
THESIS STATEMENT—Should state the purpose of your whole essay (What is the theme, and
what literary elements contribute to the theme?).
TOPIC SENTENCE—Should state the purpose of your paragraph. Should introduce the literary
element you will be discussing in that paragraph and explain how it contributes to the theme.
CONCRETE DETAIL—Should include a quotation from the text that is an example of the
literary element. Quotation must relate to the theme in a significant way. Quotation must fit into
a sentence of your own. Poor quotation incorporation happens when quotations stand alone and
do not fit the preexisting flow of ideas.
COMMENTARY—Should explain HOW the quotation supports the point you are trying to
make in the paper (i.e.: Explain the literary element and WHY it is relevant to the thesis. Avoid
clichés like: “This shows…” or “This is relevant because…” Just state your points. Commentary
should NOT summarize the quote. Establish a context before the quote, not after.
CONCLUDING SENTENCE—Should explain how both of your Concrete Details and
Commentaries in the paragraph work together to further emphasize you main idea (i.e.: How do
your literary devices work together to contribute to the theme?)
IN ADDITION TO THESE ITEMS YOUR ESSAY WILL NEED:

A full introduction (ending with the thesis statement) of at least FIVE sentences
(including thesis) that grabs the reader’s attention.

A full conclusion of at least FOUR to FIVE sentences that comes to the ultimate
conclusion about how the literary elements work together to contribute to the theme of
“The Scarlet Ibis.”

Lead in sentences which help to set up your quotations by providing a context for them

Transition sentences, which connect unrelated or only somewhat related ideas to one
another
