Germanic Kingdoms Unite Under Charlemagne

What role did the Church play in helping Clovis conquer other Germanic
peoples? The church had converted many Germanic people. Connects the
Franks to the Catholic Church.

What role did Pop Gregory the Great play in spreading the idea of a vast
unified kingdom? He had the papacy become a secular and he used church
revenues to raise armies, repair roads, and help the poor. He also negotiated
peace treaties with invaders.

What was important about Charles Martel’s victory at the Battle of Tours? If
the Muslims had won then Western Europe may have become part of the
Muslim Empire.

How did Pepin the Short strengthen the Frankish kingdom? He agreed to fight
the Lombards. In exchange, the pope anointed him as king and it started the
Carolingian Dynasty, which would rule from 751- 987.

What was the importance of Charlemagne’s coronation as emperor? He had
spread Christianity and reunited Western Europe for the first time since the
Roman Empire. He had made the empire larger than the Byzantine Empire
and had become the most powerful king in Western Europe.

How did Charlemagne govern his unified kingdom? He governed by giving
less power to the nobles and he sent out royal agents to make sure the counts
governed their counties justly.
