To help you prepare for you semester exam, the following questions are designed to
review the concepts from the material covered. You will need to answer each of the
questions and turn it in to me by NOON on Monday December 12th.
1. What are the basic units of measurement in the SI system (length, mass, time)?
2. Convert 2.15 grams to:

3. Perform the math required in each of the following questions. Be sure to
answer in the correct number of significant figures.
a. 1.45 x 1.355 x 2.03 =
b. 2.542 x (16.804 – 8.33) =
4. Write the answer to #3a and #3b in scientific notation.
5. What is the difference between speed and velocity?
6. Find the acceleration of a car that goes from 40 m/s to 10 m/s in a time span of
5 seconds.
7. What is the acceleration due to gravity? What distance will a rock travel if
dropped from the top of a building and it falls for 1.5 seconds? (page 21 in
text may be helpful)
8. What are Newton’s Laws of Motion? Describe and give an example of each.
9. Cartographers use an imaginary grid of parallel lines to locate points on the
Earth. What are those lines, how are they measured, and how are points
described on the Earth’s surface?
10. The Earth is a sphere and is made of 24 different time zones. How many
degrees is each time zone? What country covers the most time zones?
11. There are several of the imaginary lines that have special significance. What
are those imaginary lines called and what purpose do they serve?
12. What is a contour line? How odes a contour line differ from an index contour
on a topographic map (how do they look different)?
13. Where on a map can you find the meaning of the symbols that are on it? What
is the symbol of an intermittent stream on a topographical map?
14. How does a GPS work?
15. In regards to minerals:
a. What conditions must be met for a substance to be considered a
mineral?
b. What are the 6 major crystal systems?
c. What tests should be performed to correctly identify them?
16. In regards to igneous rocks:
a. What are the types of igneous rocks? (location formation)
b. What does the Bowen Reaction Series represent?
c. Describe the difference between felsic, mafic, and ultramafic rocks.
17. In regards to sedimentary rocks:
a. How are sedimentary rocks formed?
b. What are the three types of sedimentary rocks? Describe how each is
formed?
18. In regards to metamorphic rocks:
a. How are metamorphic rocks formed?
b. Describe the difference between foliated and non-foliated metamorphic
rocks. How can you visually tell the difference between the two?
19. Draw and label all portions of the rock cycle.
