Body Systems Review Sheet
Muscular System(pg 917-922)
1. What is the function of the muscular system?
Movement, storage of glucose
2. What are the three types of muscle? Define each one.
- skeletal muscles for skeleton movement
- smooth muscles for movment through blood
vessels and digestive tract
-cardiac muscle- contractions of the heart
Name: ______________
Period: ____ Seat: ____
Endocrine System (see class work)
1. What is the endocrine system and what is its
function of the endocrine system? It’s a series of
glands that help regulate the other body systems and
maintain homeostasis
2. What is a hormone? A chemical messenger
3. What mechanism controls the hormones released
in the endocrine system? Negative Feedback
4. What energy to muscles use to contract? ATP
Skeletal System (pg 911-916)
1. What are the functions of the skeletal system?
Movement, support, protection, storage, make
Blood cells
2. What are the two divisions of the skeletal system?
Axial and appendicular
3.Why do bones need blood vessels running through
them?
Because bones are made out of living cells and they
Need oxygen and nutrients, and must get rid of wastes
4. List four types of freely movable joints and give an
example of each.
***The Immune System and Disease (see packet/test)
1. What structures are involved in the first line of
defense?
Skin and mucous, hair, sweat, tears, cilia
2. What is the function of antibodies?
Mark bacteria and viruses for distruction
Immobilize bacteria and viruses
Cover virus protein receptors so they cannot
infect host cells
3. What does the body do when a person gets a
vaccine? Explain the entire process.
The vaccine has dead or weakened viruse and
the body will make antibodies against them so
when the real bacteria or virus enters the
antibodies attach to it and it cant make you sick
4. If a person has HIV or AIDS, how come they may
not be able to fight off simple infections that are
usually benign (not deadly)? The virus destroys
helper T-cells which then destroys your immune
system and you can die from any infection.
***Nervous System (see packet/test)
1. What is the function of the nervous system?
Communication, control and coordinate body
systems
2. What are the divisions of the nervous system?
Central and peripheral
Circulatory System (pg 933-944)
1. What is the function of the circulatory system?
Transport oxygen, nutrients, wastes
2. What three things make up the cardiovascular
system? Blood, blood vessels, heart
3. What is the function of the heart and what are its
four chambers? To pump blood. 2 atria and 2
ventricles
4. What are the three types of blood vessels?
Arteries, capillaries, veins
5. What do red blood cells do? Carry oxygen
Respiratory System (pg 946-950)
1. What is the function of the respiratory system?
Exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide
2. In what part of the lungs are gases exchanged?
alveoli
3. What main muscle is involved in breathing?
Diaphragm
4. What gas does the brain monitor to control your
breathing? Carbon Dioxide
Digestive System (pg 985-991)
1. What is the function of the digestive system?
Break food down into smaller molecules and
absorb the molecules
2. Which part of the digestive system breaks down
and absorbs the nutrients of your food? Small
intestine
Excretory System (pg 993-998)
1. What is the function of the excretory system?
Get ride of waste from the body
2. What are the three main parts?
Lungs, skin, kidnesy
3. What do the kidneys do? Filter the blood
