Section 1.2
1.2 Evaluate & Simplify Algebraic Expressions p. 10-17
Algebra 2
Objective: 1. You will evaluate and simplify expressions involving real
numbers.
Numerical Expression – consists of numbers, operations, and grouping
symbols.
Power – an expression formed by repeated multiplication of the same
factor.
Exponent – represents the number of times the base is used as a factor.
Base – the number or expression that is used as the factor of a repeated
multiplication.
Order of Operations
Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally
1. Parentheses (or other grouping symbols)
2. Exponents (Powers)
3. Multiplication or Division in ORDER from Left to Right
4. Addition or Subtraction in ORDER from Left To Right
Variable – a letter used to represent one or more numbers.
Algebraic Expression – an expression involving variables
Evaluating an Expression – when you simplify the expression to find its
answer
Terms – the parts of an expression that are added together.
Variable Term – a term with a variable(s)
Constant Term – term without variables, only a number
Coefficient – the number part of a term.
Like Terms – terms with the same variables and exponents.
like terms add or subtract them. Ex. 5x – 3x = 2x
When you have
Equivalent Expressions – expressions that have the same value
