Indian Youth Summit on Climate Change
Indian Youth Summit on Climate Change
7th to 10th August, 2008
Hyderabad, India
Organized by the Friendship Foundation (Hyderabad), Global Citizens for Sustainable
Development (Bangalore), Nature & Biological Sciences Society and the Indian Youth Climate
Network
Partners of the Workshop:
Infosys
Asian Citizens Alliance
Date: 7th to 10th August, 2008
Location: Infosys Campus, Gachibowli, Hyderabad
Background
Climate change has emerged as the single biggest global issue confronting humankind this
century. The adverse impacts of climate change are already being witnessed around the world,
particularly on biodiversity, agriculture, water resources, rainfall patterns, seasons, coastal
inhabitations, and high altitude communities. Despite the overwhelming scientific evidence, we
are no closer to mitigating climate change than we were when the phenomenon was first
observed. Recent scientific investigations conclude that CO2 levels in the atmosphere need to be
brought down to 350 ppm, in order to offset the most dangerous impacts of climate change.
Unless addressed with utmost impetus, climate change is very likely to fulfill its potential of
engendering a global extinction.
As a whole generation that will have to live with the risk of a changing climate, youth have a major
stake in climate change mitigation. In particular, as the Kyoto Protocol approaches the end of its
implementation period, the next few years will prove significant for any meaningful mitigation
approach. In this context, Indian youth will have to express their concern with different
stakeholders through collective action and concerted effort.
This level of youth mobilization and engagement already exists at the international level, with
youth networks fostering leadership and dialogue on climate change. However, such youth
dialogue on climate change barely exists in India, despite India being a major emitter of GHGs,
and a preeminent player in the global climate regime. Young people across India have identified
this absence of youth aspirations on climate change as a concern, and have decided to hold a
national youth summit on climate change from 7th to 10th August 2008 in Hyderabad. The aim of
the summit is to provide a platform for youth to define climate change from their viewpoint and to
engage in dialogue on possible solutions through steadfast and resolute action, in order to fight
climate change and to propagate the values and principles of sustainable development.
In Partnership with:
The Summit
The summit will:
1. Create a national youth charter/declaration on climate change that will be representative
of Indian youth’ aspirations on climate change, to be widely disseminated among Indian
youth and presented to concerned Indian ministries, civil society and the FCCC
secretariat.
2. Produce an Indian youth alternative to the post 2012 international climate regime, to be
presented to concerned Indian ministries, civil society and the FCCC secretariat.
3. Create a national youth action plan on climate change which will spell out different
actions that youth can be engaged in to address climate change.
4. Forge a nationwide partnership of youth committed to fighting climate change under the
aegis of the Indian Youth Climate Network
Being a youth event, the summit will strive to be representative of youth from diverse
backgrounds and cultures within India. The summit invites:




Youth from educational institutions and organizations hailing from each state and territory
Specialists and eminent speakers on climate change from a range of sectors
Teachers and social activists working on climate change and sustainable development
related issues.
Representatives from rural communities strongly affected by climate change.
There will be a balance of plenary sessions where youth hear from specialists; joint sittings and
youth exchanges where youth can present their work in engaging and creative ways; working
groups where youth discuss impacts, adaptation and mitigation policy; a parallel poster
presentation competition where participants can present their ideas on climate change; and a film
festival on climate change.
Above all, the national summit will present a unique opportunity for youth to exchange ideas and
experiences learn from each other and above all, to be motivated to continue the fight against
climate change. The mood of the summit will be casual in order to enable a fun filled exchange
during the three days.
Whether you’re at school or working, male or female, from rural or urban India, regardless
of your caste, religion or race, we would like you to attend. We want as large, diverse and
equal representation as possible at this event as possible. The main criterion of
attendance is a passion for protecting humanity and our planet earth. We aim to build a
bright clean future for youth present and future. Hope to see you there!
