PLATE TECTONICS
Converging = mountains
Diverging = rift valleys
Transformation = earthquakes
Subduction = volcanoes
CHONPS
ORGANIC COMPOUNDS
Carbon, Hydrogen, Oxygen,
Nitrogen, Phosphorus, Sulfur
EROSION
CONVECTION
*SUN produces energy
*Warm air rises, cold air sinks
* Winds and Ocean currents
AQUIFER
Flowing ground water
Increases with precipitation
Decreases with drought and wells
Water table is highest point
EXTINCTION
 Actions of Wind, Water, Ice, and Gravity
*Cause - DESTRUCTION of
HABITAT by humans
 Plants help STOP erosion by holding the soil
in place
HABITAT – where an organism lives
Cell Characteristics
Prokaryotic = no nucleus (PRO NO!)
Eukaryotic = has a nucleus (You Yes)
Autotrophic – makes own food (producer)
Heterotrophic – hunts food (consumer)
CHEMICAL CHANGES
Rusting
Burning
Digesting
Bubbling or Fizzing
Unexpected Temp Change
(Physical change = chewing, cutting)
WEATHER
Low pressure = lousy (rainy, cloudy)
High pressure = happy (sunny)
Fronts move Northwest to Southeast
Fossil Fuels
Coal, Oil, Natural Gas
*Global Warming – increased
levels of CO2 in atmosphere
*Acid Rain – factories
releasing chemicals
BIODIVERSITY – the variety of
plants and animals in and
ecosystem
SUSTAINABILITY – healthy
ecosystem due to large # of plant
and animals (biodiversity)
Excretory –
Filters waste
from body
(kidney)
Balanced and Unbalanced Forces
Balanced = no movement (zero
Newton’s) or constant speed
Unbalanced = movement and
greater than 1 Newton of
force
HURRICANES
Succession
Lichens & Moss  Soil
 grass / weeds 
shrubs small trees (pines) 
big trees (oaks)
Plate Tectonic Theory
1. Continents fit together like puzzle pieces
2. Fossils are found on opposite sides of
oceans.
3. Major landforms (rivers and mountains)
are found on multiple continents
Inherited Traits
Selective breeding = short
amount of time (humans
involved)
Natural Selection = multiple generations (NO
human involvement)
TIDES
- LOW PRESSURE
- WARM WATER (tropics)
- SUMMER and FALL
Caused by pull of moon’s gravity
Northern Hemisphere Seasons
GALAXY
Spring = Straight (sun, moon, earth)
Neap = Moon at 90 (Ninety) degree angle
from the earth
Milky Way – disk shaped
(spiral)
Stars – make up a galaxy
Nebula – gas and dust that
form a star
Density =
Speed =
mass / volume
distance / time
Force =
Velocity

acceleration

Constant Speed
speed and
direction
NEWTON’S LAWS
Inertia (object at rest stays at
rest)
2. Force = Mass X Acceleration
3. Every action has an equal
and opposite reaction

Periodic Table
Periods = rows, energy levels
Groups (family) = columns, similar
properties, same valence electrons
GROUP 18 = NOBLE GAS
METALS
Left of the stair-step line
- luster (shiny)
- conduct electricity
- malleable and ductile
NON-METALS
Right of the stair-step line
- no luster
- no conductivity
- good insulator
Element – found on periodic table
C6H12O6
1 compound
3 elements
24 atoms
Compound – made up of 2 or
more elements (two or more
capital letters)
LAW OF CONSERVATION OF MASS
Balancing a chemical equation so the
same # of atoms of each element is
found on the reactant and the product
side
2 Plant Cell Differences
**Atoms in a chemical
reaction are NEVER LOST
OR GAINED, they are only
REARRANGED **
CELL ORGANELLES
CELL WALL
CHLOROPLAST
Mitochondria – Power plant. Energy
Vacuole – water storage
Nucleus – contains genetic material
(DNA, chromosomes, genes)
Reproduction
Sexual – 2 parents; diverse offspring
PREDATOR – hunts prey
PREY – eaten by predator
PARASITE – harms the
host
HOST – harmed by parasite
Asexual – 1 parent; uniform
offspring
Work =
force x distance
Acceleration
Speeding Up,
Slowing Down,
Changing Direction at a
Constant Speed

HUMAN BODY SYSTEMS
Endocrine – regulates hormones (glands)
Integumentary – protects (skin, hair, nails)
Circulatory – transfers nutrients to cells
(blood)
Respiratory – exchange of gases (lungs)
CELL THEORY
1. All life is composed of cells
2. Cells are the basic unit of life
3. Cells arise from other cells
ECOSYSTEM
BIOTIC – living factors (plants,
animals, fungi, bacteria)
ABIOTIC – nonliving factors (sunlight,
water, temperature, or soil)
SEASONS
Caused by:
1. tilt of earth (23.5*)
2. revolution of earth around the sun (365
days)
METALLOIDS
ON the stair-step line
- have properties of both
metals and non-metals

STAAR Review Flash Cards Tips and Strategies
-
We have provided these decks of cards to struggling students over the last several years and have
seen dramatic improvements in our scores.
-
Cards can be printed on address labels (2x4”) Avery 18163
-
I have included a blank template in case you wanted to add more cards to the deck
-
We print out the decks, but have students make them with us in class. They take ownership over the
deck if they actually have to make it.
-
The deck is 100% editable. I realize every teacher teaches the concepts different. Feel free to add
your own spin to things.
-
These cards highlight the REALLY IMPORTANT topics only.
-
Color code the decks by topic to help students compartmentalize information (force and motion,
chemistry, earth & space, etc)
-
You don’t have to use address label. Students could tape/glue regular sheets of paper to cards, or
you could print them on hard stock paper.
