Pharaoh Tutankhamun
Tutankhamun was born in 1341 BC. and died very young. His father was Amenophis IV., who tried to stop the
influence of the priests. Amenophis called himself Akhenaten1. He said the most important god was not Amun but
Aten, the sun god. He changed the religious system and wanted only one god, not many. The priests did not like
this, but they could not stop him. After his death Egypt got a new pharaoh: Tutankhaten, his son, who was still a
boy and only eight years old. Of course, the boy did not rule himself but some important men – priests and viziers2
– ruled for him. His advisers decided for him because he was so young. He married his half-sister and lived in
Thebes. His name was changed into Tutankhamun, the most important god was Amun again.
Soon after he became pharaoh one of his advisers started to plan Tutankhamun’s tomb. With a huge and
expensive tomb they wanted to show how important the young pharaoh was. His advisers also planned many
statues and pictures of the old gods so the Egyptian people knew who their gods were.
Tutankhamun was not very healthy – he suffered from a bone disease and needed a walking stick. He was
between 18 or 20 years old when he died.
Everyone wants to know why Tutankhamun died so young. Some people believe someone killed him – perhaps
one of his advisers. Others think that it was his wife – because she knew that Tutankhamun could not have
children.
Some archaeologists say that it was an accident and that he fell off his chariot 3 during a race and then died. Others
think that Tutankhamun died because he broke his leg and got an infection. Now we know that he also had
malaria and died because he was not very fit in general.
His tomb was not finished so he was buried in a smaller tomb in the Valley of the Kings. Later another tomb was
built on top of it. So after a while nobody knew exactly where his tomb was.
In 1922 a British archaeologist, Howard Carter from Norfolk, discovered Tutankhamun’s tomb. It took him a long
time to find it and he needed a lot of money. But a rich Englishman, Lord Carnarvon, spent altogether a million
pounds so that Carter could search for the tomb. Finally, Carter discovered the tomb and 3000 treasures in it. All
the treasures were in the tomb to help Pharaoh Tutankhamun in his afterlife.
Now most of these objects are on display in the Egyptian Museum in Cairo.
