11) List the 7 characteristics of a civilization:
12) How did archaeologist decipher (figure
out) the meaning of hieroglyphics?
Answers that would not get full credit:
• Through the Rosetta Stone
• They noticed the Rosetta Stone had three languages and it was the
same message in each
• They could read Greek
• They found a stone with writing on it
Who is they? What is it?
12) How did archaeologist decipher (figure
out) the meaning of hieroglyphics?
Answers that would get full credit:
• “When the French discovered the Rosetta Stone, they already knew
Greek. They realized that all 3 languages on the stone said the same
thing, so they were able to use the Greek to decipher Hieroglyphics”
• “In 1799, the French found the Rosetta Stone. It had a message
written in 3 different languages. They realized that the message was
the same in each language, so they able to compare Greek to the
Hieroglyphics and figure out the meaning.”
13) Compare and contrast Mesopotamia and
Ancient Egypt. List at least two similarities and two
differences between the civilizations.
Answers that would not get full credit:
• Egypt mummified their dead (then what did Mesopotamia do?)
• Both created writing systems (what were they called?)
• Egypt had a pharaoh, Mesopotamia did not (what did Mesopotamia
have?)
• They both lived near rivers (which rivers?)
• They were both religious (add more detail)
• Egypt had better technology (give examples)
13) Compare and contrast Mesopotamia and
Ancient Egypt. List at least two similarities and two
differences between the civilizations.
SIMILARITIES
Answers that would get full credit:
• The Egyptians and Sumerians (from
Mesopotamia) were similar because they
both relied on rivers that flooded once a
year which made it possible to farm. In
Egypt, the Nile River flowed north and
flooded each July. In Mesopotamia, the
Tigris and Euphrates Rivers flooded each
spring.
• Both the Egyptians and Sumerians (or
Mesopotamians) used irrigation systems to
increase the amount of crops they could
farm.
• Both the Egyptians and Sumerians were
polytheistic, meaning they believed in
many gods.
DIFFERENCES
Answers that would get full credit:
• The Sumerians created the world’s first
written language, called cuneiform. The
Egyptians created a writing system called
hieroglyphics.
• The Sumerians wrote on clay tablets, while
the Egyptians used papyrus to make paper.
• The Sumerians built large temples called
ziggurats, while the Egyptians built pyramids.
• The Sumerians created new technology like
the wheel and the plow. The Egyptians
created advanced technology, like using
architecture to build large pyramids and using
anatomy to learn more about the human
body
14) Describe the religious beliefs of the Ancient
Egyptians. Please include specific details!
2 main things I am looking for:
• The Egyptians were
polytheistic and believed in
over 2000 gods
• The Egyptians would mummify
the bodies of the dead to
preserve them for the afterlife
