Section 2.5
2.5 Apply the Distributive Property p. 96-101
Algebra 1
Objective: 1. You will apply the Distributive Property.
Read through p. 96-98
Go over the example and figures on top of p. 96
Equivalent Expressions – 2 expressions that have the same value for all
values of the variable.
Distributive Property – states that you take the value outside of the
parentheses and multiply it by every value inside of the parentheses.
Key Concept Box p. 96 The Distributive Property
Let a, b, and c be real numbers
Words
Algebra
Examples
The Product of
a(b + c) = ab + ac
3(4 + 2) = 3(4) + 3(2)
a and (b + c)
(b + c)a = ba + ca
(3 + 5)2 = 3(2) + 5(2)
The Product of
a and (b - c)
a(b - c) = ab - ac
(b - c)a = ba - ca
5(6 - 4) = 5(6) - 5(4)
(8 - 6)4 = 8(4) - 6(4)
Terms – the parts of an expression that are added together.
Variable Term – a term with a variable(s)
Constant Term – term without variables, only a number
Coefficient – the number part of a term with a variable.
Like Terms – terms with the same variables and exponents.
like terms add or subtract them. Ex. 5x – 3x = 2x
When you have
Simplified Expression – an expression that has no grouping symbols and
has all like terms combined.
When combining like terms you keep the variable(s) and exponents and
just add or subtract the coefficients.
