For each of the following:
1. Read the problem.
2. Figure out what information you are given and what information you are seeking (A length? An
Angle?)
3. Draw a diagram.
4. Set up an equation.
5. Solve that equation.
A) Here is a random triangle floating in space. What is the length of the side labeled x?
31°
8 cm
x
B) An airplane takes off at an 8° angle. Once it has travelled 1500 m away from the runway (this distance
is measured along the ground), how high is it?
C) A ladder is leaning against a wall. The ladder hits 6 feet up on the wall. It is leaning at a 69° angle.
How far away is the bottom of the ladder away from the wall?
D) Another ladder leans against another wall. It hits 4.6 meters up on the wall. The bottom of the ladder is
1.4 meters away from the wall. At what angle is the ladder leaning?
E) Draw a right triangle with an 88° angle (tricky, but try it!). Measure all three sides and label them with
the lengths. Calculate the tangent using those measurements. Show your steps.
Find the tan (88°) with your calculator. How close was your version to the correct calculator value?
